How long would it take to swap the pistons and rods?
Is it safe to just swap them without any machine work?
I'm at 20k miles. Care will be H/C/I/FBO/E85. Are pistons and rods really anything I need to worry about at this point?
If you have the heads off I would change the pistons..... One of mine broke! I don't know what kind of power you are going to make but the pistons/rings are not really designed to handle a lot of boost in these cars if you beat on them.

I've also heard that there have been failures with piston pins.

Most time consuming part is filing the rings. All you might need is a ball hone on a drill if you want to knock any glaze off the cylinder walls. We did nothing to mine but it only had about 4000 miles on it. If you take you time it'll take 4-6 hours being cautious.

I completely agree as I just did this exact same thing. Filing the rings and doing it right will take the longest for sure.
