TPMS reading off
Let me start by saying I did a search and found nothing, but if some of you know of an existing thread, please pass it along.
I recently took my '16 1SS in for an oil change and rotate. Prior to this my tire pressure monitor system and my air pressure gauge matched up perfectly. Upon getting it back from service, the two no longer match, the TPMS reads 2 psi less than the gauge (consistently). I talked to the service rep and he says that it can not be corrected back. But that doesn't sound right to me. How could it be matched prior to the rotation and not afterwards; and not be correctable? My question, to those of you who have experience, is the service rep correct? Or, is he trying to BS me? And PLEASE, be gentle with this old non-tech owner.

This sounds to me that your dealer tech rotated your tires but did not relearn the TPMS. The pressure sensors are location specific as they each have a unique ID that the car learns and identifies their location (FR, FL, RR, RL).
Once the tires were rotated, the technician needed to re-train the car to the new location of the sensors. I'd say he is B.S.ing you. Take it to a tire store and ask them what they would charge you to re-learn the sensors. |

What type of gauge are you using?

I have a similar question: My sensors have always been a little off. I can inflate my tires and check then with multiple gauges to all be exactly the same psi. But inside on my dash, there is always one corner that is high, and one that is low. I bought winter wheels with new TPMS sensors, and they are actually more accurate than the factory ones in my summer tires. (I'm on my second set of summer tires, but I re-used the factory TPMS Sensors, and the problem persists).
What level of accuracy can we expect? Is this something I can ask the dealer to replace with more accurate sensors? |

Just to be clear, when you say "rotate", you mean the dealer just switched the wheels side to side, and stayed on the same axle, right?

Here is the procedure from the manual: TPMS Sensor Matching Process Each TPMS sensor has a unique identification code. The identification code needs to be matched to a new tire/wheel position after rotating the vehicle’s tires or replacing one or more of the TPMS sensors. The TPMS sensor matching process should also be performed afterreplacing a spare tire with a road tire containing the TPMS sensor. The malfunction light and the DIC message should go off at the nextignition cycle. The sensors are matched to the tire/wheel positions, using a TPMS relearn tool, in the following order: driver side front tire passenger side front tire passenger side rear tire driver side rear. See your dealer for service or to purchase a relearn tool. A TPMS relearn tool can also be purchased. See Tire Pressure Monitor Sensor Activation Tool at www.gmtoolsandequipment.com or call 1-800-GM TOOLS (1-800-468-6657). There are two minutes to match the first tire/wheel position, and five minutes overall to match all four tire/wheel positions. If it takes longer, the matching process stops and must be restarted. The TPMS sensor matching process is: 1. Set the parking brake. 2. Place the vehicle power mode in ON/RUN/START. See Ignition Positions 0 216. 3. Make sure the Tire Pressure info display option is turned on. The info displays on the DIC can be turned on and off through the Settings menu. See Driver Information Center (DIC) 4. Use the five-way DIC control on the right side of the steering wheel to scroll to the Tire Pressure screen under the DIC info page. See Driver Information Center (DIC) 0 128. 5. Press and hold SEL in the center of the five-way DIC control. The horn sounds twice to signal the receiver is in relearn mode and the TIRE LEARNING ACTIVE message displays on the DIC screen. 6. Start with the driver side front tire. 7. Place the relearn tool against the tire sidewall, near the valve stem. Then press the button to activate the TPMS sensor. A horn chirp confirms that the sensor identification code has been matched to this tire and wheel position. 8. Proceed to the passenger side front tire, and repeat Step 7. 9. Proceed to the passenger side rear tire, and repeat Step 7. 10. Proceed to the driver side rear tire, and repeat Step 7. The horn sounds two times to indicate the sensor identification code has been matched to the driver side rear tire, and the TPMS sensor matching process is no longer active. The TIRE LEARNING ACTIVE message on the DIC display screen goes off. 11. Shut the ignition off. 12. Set all four tires to the recommended air pressure level as indicated on the Tire and Loading Information label. |

Correct. I have Conti all seasons, which allow side to side. Summer run flats were to harsh a ride for me. Conti's much smoother (JMHO).

Thanks a bunch. Just what I was looking for. Needless to say, this particular dealer has seen the MY SS for the last time.

I rarely see all four corners showing the same pressure on the TPMS monitor. e.g. solar loading on one side of the car can raise pressure slightly.

It's not a real problem... just me being lazy... don't want to remember what each corner's starting point was and add/subtract as I go. |
