Thumbs down Car towed to dealer at 300km (186 miles) SOLVED

Hey guys. Bought a 2017 1SS last week and its already had to be towed to the dealer for repairs after putting only 300km (186 miles) on it. I have been driving it like a grandpa, so no abuse whatsoever here.

Problem started yesterday on the way home from work. I was going up a medium incline on the hill a few blocks from my house when suddenly all the gauges on my dash started to move all over the place, bouncing from one side to another. During this time the car lost nearly all power and started misfiring/hesitating. No check engine. I managed to just make it up the hill and pull over. After turning the car off for two minutes I was able to turn it back on as usual and drive the few remaining blocks home.

Later in the evening I decided to get groceries and see if the problem was a one off, or if it would reappear. On the way to the grocery store it misfired a couple of times and seemed to shift funny.

After getting my groceries, I went back to my car and hit the start button only to have it attempt to start for a solid 10 seconds straight before I managed to stop it, as clearly something was wrong. A check engine came on, which OnStar told me shortly after was a P0341 code, relating to the ignition/cam sensor. She also mentioned she had the same code show for another 2017 SS she was dealing with yesterday as well. I tried to start it again only to have the rpms bounce around and then the engine die. 2 hours later the tow truck showed and its currently at the dealer this morning. I'm waiting to hear back on a diagnosis.

Not a good start to my new ownership. After some brief searching I have not come across anyone else with the same code/problem. Hopefully I didn't get a lemon.

It could be that the ECU got wet somehow. When I bought my '02 Camaro SS, they had cleaned the engine bay and my ECU was full of water. Had similar problems with gauges acting oddly, transmission problems, and all kinds of weird stuff.

Oddly enough I got caught in my first rain storm the other day on the way home, which was the same trip the problems started occurring on. If that's the issue then it is pretty crappy to think rain could cause a malfunction of this magnitude.

The only way a rain storm could get the engine bay all wet I would think is if it's missing the hood weatherstripping or underbody panels. I've had my car power-washed for over a year (so about 40 times) and water has never entered the engine bay.

As for the dude who had the dealer wash the engine bay....wtf. I hope that's documented somewhere official. Sounds like a massive electrical gremlin waiting to happen if you kept that car.

Thanks, me too. A little scared to be honest, that's a rather big problem for the first few hundred clicks! 5th Camaro I've owned in my life and all the others have been very low maintenance.

My story and maybe not your problem, I picked up my 2SS and it had less then 50 km on it the gauges were going wacky, ended up being a pinched wire under the passenger seat.

I found the issue on this forum in the waiting lobby in 2 minutes and stopped them as they were about to start ripping stuff apart and what do you know that was the problem been driving on since. Good luck

Hmmm thanks for the info. They haven't even got to trying to diagnose my car yet. I'm stuck in a 2017 Cruze

You would have to hope that driving in the rain wouldn't render your car inoperable.

So the verdict is in:

The serp belt somehow came in contact with a wiring harness and started to wear through it. Very strange and very annoying to think somehow it came from the factory like that. I don't know if someone forgot a zap strap or something.

Great news. I do believe there is a thread about this happening to one or two other owners. Happy for you!

Oh really? Thats very interesting. Sounds like a bunch of cars made it out of the factory with this issue. Thank goodness its an easy painless fix.

Anyone have link(s) to any of said threads relating to my issue?
