Classic case of design by committee.

Pontiac Aztek & C6 Corvette – Would You Believe These Were Designed by the Same Designer?

You already know the Pontiac Aztek was the ugliest car produced in the last 40 years, and it was a flop. What you don’t know is that its designer, Tom Peters, went on to design the 2005–2013 C6 Corvette and now oversees Performance Car Design for Chevy that includes the Camaro and Corvette. So why wasn’t he fired, instead, for designing one of the most reviled cars of all time? Well, there were reasons the Aztek looks the way it does, and it was a combo of cockeyed mandates, bad process, and compromise, which Peters had little to do with.

When first conceived as a concept, the Aztek was a cool-looking cross between a station wagon and an SUV. Its proportions were great, and it looked like it could almost have been a rugged, new-millennium Nomad. By the time it was green-lit for production, internal decisions doomed it.

First, it was assigned to the minivan platform and received all their narrow-track, high-roof, high-beltline, slab-sided goodness. Timing is everything, and during this dark period of GM’s past, it was heavily criticized for being a staid company creating boring products. So an edict was passed down from the GM Board of Directors mandating 40 percent of all new products be “innovative.” This drove engineers and designers to go for all of the versatility crap hung on the Aztek, like the built-in camping tent, seat-mounted back packs, and sliding cargo floor with grocery compartments—never mind that the thing looked terrible. The zeal for innovation blinded developers.

It scored terribly in consumer clinics, yet GM thought it knew better. When it debuted in 2001, Peters was quoted as saying, “[GM] wanted to do bold, in-your-face vehicles not for everybody.” Tom’s an overachiever, which is one reason he’s been such a successful designer, but the “not for everybody” part he might have overachieved just a bit.

Blame the mods for this thread, though there are several 5G guys that troll here often then laugh about it over on cam5.

IMO the problem with the 6th Gen is people just don't care for it period. As much as this car was hyped by all of the press it just never caught on with the public.

Chevy focused so much on performance they neglected driver and passenger comfort. The high window sills are extremely awkward, backseat useless, visabilty is poor, and there is a cramped feeling inside the car. These are all things in which the Mustang is doing better and the sales reflect it.

Sales figures show retail sales are equal to Mustang and better than Challenger. People like it. Rental car companies do not but the $3,106 higher average transaction price is a likely a factor there

Camaro: 2%

When you then look at retail sales YTD, the Mustang maintains a narrow lead.

Camaro: 14,992
Challenger: 10,064

This is not the case.

Comfort:

It's not uncomfortable at all. We spent about 6 hours on the road on Monday in the car. I have back and sciatic issues, the wife has a tweaked ACL, back issues, hip issues. Neither of us were uncomfortable or cramped. The 5 is bigger, but I don't find the 6 to be less comfortable by any measure. The back seat in my 5 was only slightly less useless. Case in point: We threw one of the kids in the back once a few years back and the wife had to cramp herself up to make the room. There was no way we could have fit her behind me. It wasn't comfortable to do so, certainly not for any drive of more than a few minutes.

Windows:

Haven't noticed any more awkwardness here moving from my '10 to the '17.

Visibility:

Slightly worse than the 5 but no less easy to adjust and compensate for.

Never drove the Aston Marstang and never will. Not a fan of the car. The only Mustang I'd ever consider owning would be 1970 or earlier.

Wow...that's just sad... Like what purpose does this serve?

Regardless, if you own a 5th or 6th you've got yourself one badass pony car that you should be proud of...I'd love a 5th gen Z28, but that's not going to happen.

Trolling is solely for the reaction you receive. There's a reason there's a smiley.
