My "Custom" 1LE Jacking Block

Rainy day today so I decided to custom make a jacking block for wheel swaps...

Just a piece of 2x4 CROSS CUT so load in across grain. Works perfect. Holds in place and comes off easily after jacking.

Dimensions of kerf are 1/4" wide at top x ~ 5/8" deep - tapered (cut with sawzall to get the taper). Length of 2x4 section is 1 1/4" long (1/2" land + 1/4" kerf + 1/2" land). Lands and bottom of kerf all bear load.

Sanded and "custom" lettered! Doubles as a business card holder!!!

Good work thinking ahead and cutting the notch against the grain.

He never said it was the original design.

I almost made one of these the other day.

Yep. When I first swapped on my winter wheels and tire set back in January, I used an old block I had laying around that was "roughly" the right dimension. It was lengthwise on the grain and split almost immediately, but worked well enough to get the tires and wheels swapped the first time (the lands at the top supporting the weight).

Must be cross grain.

Oh well, as long as we learn from our mistakes!

Nice, knowing myself, i would have measured, measured, cut, measured, cut again, and sanded it till it was perfect. Then realize that I set it up with the grain. Then I'd make a second one the right way and not even bother sanding it. Because I love doing things twice.

Good to know it comes off easily after jacking...

Trick is get the kerf big enough so it comes off easy, but still holds while positioning jack and puck...1/4" at top tapered to about 2 blade widths (1/8" or so) at bottom of ~5/8" deep kerf was about where I ended up after some trial and error...

Test fit along the way to figure out exactly how deep to make the kerf, as well as determine how much material to take out of the tapered kerf so it "grabs" to hold in place during positioning, but still releases easily after jacking...

We have plenty of 2x4's laying around and it is supposed to be raining this weekend, so me thinks it's a good weekend project to try
