Didn't you also get in an accident? Can't imagine that helps with resale even if it was minor

My GF's low mileage 2015 Sonic RS(all option, diamond white paint) is worth HALF of what she paid for it 18 months ago. Thats 18 months for $15k in deprecition on a $30k car. When the loan is paid off, 0% for 60 mnths, we expect it to be worth around $5,000 in good condition, lol.
$30K for a SONIC?

I don't care if it had power butt massagers, you screwed yourself on that deal.

At first that looks like a huge hit, but I certainly didn't pay sticker, so it's a lot more palatable. Unless you're a huge sucker, most dealers know you didn't pay MSRP.

Any time you buy a new car you have to realize the moment you drive it off the lot you just "lost" a lot of value should you ever have to move it. Just how it goes.
There are dealers selling NEW 2017 Grand Sports for $57K. If someone offers you $50K you'd better grab it.

That's $30k in Canadian dollars... sounds about right for a fully loaded sonic around here

You'd have to be Loonie to pay $30K for a Sonic!

Or you'd have to be paying in Loonies, I guess.

I think if you want to get rid of it you should sell it yourself if possible. That's the only way you will get fair market. I recently traded in my 2016 2SS with the similar sticker price and got 32K. They already had a buyer lined up for it, it didn't even make it to their website. It was the only "stick" they had on the lot, and only had 3k miles, and I had it detailed before I brought it in. My loss their gain. The only car I ever owned that held its value well was my 07' Sti, I lost ~$7500 in 9 years when I traded it in.

Depending on what you're going to buy, I'd say keep it. I get way more compliments in my 1LE then I ever did in the 2SS. Today I had someone come up while I was still sitting in it in the parking lot and started chatting with me about it. He said, "those aftermarket wheels must have cost a lot!" haha.

When you say you lost $7500 how do factor that loss amount?

As I said in an earlier post, I was recently offered 32.5 for my 1ss that I paid 31.4k (used) 6 months ago. If I were to accept that trade, my car would have actually appreciated in my case.
Better to buy slightly used when you can and let the first owner take the hit!

This is the reason you work out a reasonable price for the new car before bringing up the subject of a trade in. Salesmen will always try to do the opposite.
Also depending on the tax law where you are, the trade in value is deducted before sales tax.

Makes sense.

According to KBB, my car is worth about $29,000. 22% loss in one year.

Lol! Either way that's a ton of $ and a Malibu LT territory which is quite a lot of car. Paid 20G CAD for a nice Cruze LT last yr
(during 20% sale event).

Coming at this discussion from the other side, I am actually in the market for a HBM 1LE SS and have been watching them go new for $39-42 (for the good deals), I fully expect that by the fall (which is when I expect to be ready to purchase) if available, these will drop to $37+/- as the leftover 2016's last October were going for 20% off (I am fully aware that there may not be any 2016 1LE SS leftovers, but that's my timetable right now). I have noticed the number of them listed on Cars.com dwindle as of late but there are still a number en-route to dealerships that don't have them listed yet. I have seen 2 "Used" HBM 1LE SS's on Cars.com both asking over $42 which I think is crazy at this point in time, but if the demand is there and the supply isn't I totally understand it.

"If" I was ready to purchase today I would be happy to get a new one for $39-40, I would consider purchasing a used one that had a clean history for around $37 (price would vary depending on mileage and tire wear).

If I wait until the fall and they are available I would hope to be able to get a 2016 leftover for close to $37 and that should drop the price for a used one to $34-35, If I can't find one that meets that criteria I am willing to wait to get a 2018 and again hope to pay closer to $40 for it.

These are my "opinions and expectations" based on what I am willing to pay and hope the market will allow based on what I am seeing and have seen over the last year in the market. I hope this helps give another point of view on what someones used 1LE might be worth to resell. Again, this is what "I" would be willing to pay, others will undoubtedly be willing to pay more. One thing to remember about trading in a sports car at the end of summer in the Midwest or northern states is the demand for the cars drops off as demand for Trucks and SUV's goes up.

If the OP is in the market to sell later this year hit me up with a PM and maybe we can agree on a number and cut a dealership middleman out of the equation. Best of luck to you, I truly hope you get what you want/need for the car if you do decide to sell.
