How's the A10 Transmission?
With the wife graduating from nursing school tomorrow
I'm sort of shopping the ZL1. I'm on the fence about whether I'm ok with taking probably a $15k+ hit trading in a year old car, but while that rolls around with my conscience I'm wondering how the A10 is holding up. I bought the m6 in my car well partly because i like manual but mostly because the a8 has more than its fair share of issues. Would you folks that have one care to share your experiences/impressions of how the A10 performs and any issues you might be having with it?

I love the A10..
It doesn't hunt around for gear in town or on the highway, like some feared it would with that may options. It settles right in just like any other auto I've had. You don't feel the shifts really. It's odd.. They're quick and precise, but you don't feel it kicking in gears. You really more hear the engine and see the RPM drop over anything. It upshifts very fast when commanded to do so in manual mode. Auto mode upshift is amazing (as above and precise) The 1st gear ratio allows for very quick offline acceleration even without the blower engaging (part throttle). Down shifts are quick as well, whether commanding it or letting it kick down on its own. I don't feel I have to coerce it to kick down either, it just knows where it needs to be and does it. I've not had mine on track yet, since I'm still getting up to the 1500mi mark, so I'll have report back after that point.. But, for the moment, I don't have any regrets and I love this transmission. The A10 runs hotter than you're used to, so if you're paying attention to the Trans Temp gauge, you'll probably see it parked around 180F or so once it's warmed up.. But, it never really moves from there, so it's most likely the targeted temp point. |

Congrats to your lady for passing Nursing school...that alone is a huge accomplishment!!
The A10 is amazing. I have been a manual trans guy for a long time. I told myself I would never get a muscle car with an automatic. Then the A10 trans came out. It really is phenomenal. At any speed, just tap the gas and it explodes off. From 80mph, 125 comes soo fast you wouldn't believe it. It just downshifts lightning fast and takes off. I can hear and feel it when it shifts...and it sounds and feel soo soo smooth man. You will not regret it. |

I've had a manual since I learned to drive and a manual Camaro since 2009 when the 5th Gen came back. When I decided to trade her in for the ZL1, I was dead set on the manual again. I heard some discussions about how great the A10 was and how it was going to perform in the ZL1. I decided to bite the bullet and go for it.
I'm 1300 miles in and I seriously haven't had a second of regret. Those 1300 miles have been a complete mix of highway, back country roads, city streets and stop and go traffic. I've thrown pretty much everything I could at it so far during the break in period. It's performed flawlessly. The shifts are ultra quick when you want and need them to be. However, it adapts so seamlessly to every situation. It can be civil when it needs to be and totally bananas when you want it to be. I don't see any reason for the manual with an automatic this good. When I want the manual feel I push the shifter over and either use it or the paddles. In fact, this is really the only automatic I've been in where that actually provides a truly manual feel. I don't miss the manual and I'd buy the A10 again in a second. Good luck and happy shopping! |

FWIW, the 10 only operates in 8 gears around town.
Here's some reading http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/h...0speed-gm.html http://www.caranddriver.com/flipbook...c-transmission http://gmauthority.com/blog/2017/04/...180-mph-video/ |

Was set on a10 from the beginning, 1800 miles in now and no regrets. Very smooth shifts that you cannot feel at all.
The car just goes, full throttle and it just picks up right where it left off with each shift, you only know its shifting gears from engine/exhaust sounds as mentioned before in other posts. It is a very fun transmission to drive with.

I have been a fan of the manual 6 speed over the years, but I love the A10.
Now that I am beyond break in period, I find myself putting in manual mode and driving with the paddles most of the time. I love the sound of the rev matched downshift and clicking through the gears as it accelerates. I find the A10 very engaging. I find manual shifting is the best way to modulate the noise (up that is). In Track mode, it makes some nice noises on accel and decel. You can feel the downshifts in manual mode, but there is nothing here not to love. I have done a few autoX's so far. It is great, keeping right in the meat of the power band. I let it do its own shifting there since it is quicker than I am. Pretty much flawless. When I am in the neighborhood, I sometimes put it back in automatic and let it drive at 1400 RPM, quiet as possible.

I got ya beat as I traded in a 6 month old car (BMW 650i) to get my A10 ZL1. I bought that car used so didn't take as bad a hit as it could have been but would have traded regardless...life is too short to drive boring cars. That heavy BMW had an 8 speed auto that drove me crazy as it constantly hunted for the right gear and was never in the power band. It had a nice V8 but a 'driving machine' it was not.
This A10 transmission does not have that problem. I have been amazed by how it constantly seems to know the correct gear, no hesitation, no lurching, it just works. I love the way it automatically downshifts as I come out of a turn due to the computer/g-forces...very smart tranny. Paddle shifting is a blast but I usually let the transmission do the shifting cuz it is that good. I have driven the PDK by Porsche and this is better, IMO. GM really nailed it with this car. Good luck. And as someone that also works in the medical field, tell your wife Congrats! Nurses are the unsung heroes of the medical world.

Amazing tranny! The technology in this and the way it shifts rivals the best offerings out there! I have a 2017 Dual Clutch and I'll dare say this A10 is right there with it! Amazing!

I'm 600 miles into the A10 and love it, we leased the car so we know just what we are loosing up front. No sales tax and it cost me me $85.50 for two year to put plates on the car. I know I won't keep it so it worked great for us.
