Daytona PDX

Went to Daytona yesterday for our first CFR PDX of the year on the full (24Hr) course. Other than being slightly damp in the first session after some overnight rain we had a terrific day at the track.... that and me missing essentially all of the first session due to a throttle controller (another story). Both myself and MatthewAMEL were there along with about 40 other drivers. There was also another '17 SS 1LE there (white) and a friend of Matthews that had rented a '17 SS Camaro (A8) for the weekend.

Unfortunately, I'm sorry to say that I have absolutely zero video from that day! Not for the lack trying however. Since my car doesn't have the PDR I set up the GoPro3 just like I did for the Solo event two weeks ago. I made sure to start the recording for every session, heard the camera do it's little sequence of beeps like it always does. However, I had neglected to verify that the damn memory card was in the camera. Discovered that the minute I tried to download the vids.

Next time I'll get it right, I promise. Really sucks too because, while I know it's not an SS with the V8, this car 'really' sounds sweet when it gets up over 6000 rpm. Especially at 120+!

I managed to go both faster and quicker around that track, with my measly ole' V6 1LE Camaro, than I have ever gone there before. And I've been running around that place for 35 years come this August. I was able to get a few laps in the 2:17s with a terminal velocity of 140+ in the final session of the day. This with a significant wind from the SW all day that was impacting our top speed from Nascar T-4 through the tri-oval.

I also remembered to check a few things related to some questions I've seen on this forum.
Trans temp the entire 25 min. sessions was between 175-185. It would drop noticeably during each cool-off lap at least 25 deg. I'm impressed!

Oil temp got up to 275+. I didn't like seeing that but I also don't have any idea where that measurement is being taken from. I've been told it's just a calculation from other parameters, don't know. Also, like the trans temp, backing off and during the cool-off lap the temps drop quickly.

On a whim (and because I was curious) I set the B trip meter to zero before our last two sessions on grid. Checked after each of those sessions and was getting about 6.2 mpg per session. Here's a pic after the last session, 8 laps with the last being really slow due to a BFA.

We also went to lunch together, Red White & Blue baby! (Yes, at the Asian Grill)

Yes, it was awesome. Yes, you are kinda a moron for forgetting the memory card.

Never fear, I'm editing my video now to post. It's mostly me struggling to keep up with you all day. (Jay is fast, people).

True, but not for long. Our friend driving the red one was quite proficient behind the wheel and it didn't take him long to get past both of us and proceed to motor away!

I was impressed!

I'm working on editing mine now. It was an epic three-day event with 150 minutes of track time and 12 AutoX runs. There is a lot to sort through.

My poor GY's. The 2nd set was 10 days old. 3rd set soon...

Haha... Thanks for the kind words Buzzbeard.

Now that I've got a taste of what it's like with power... I feel like I've fallen into a rabbit hole.... All your fault MatthewAMEL! These cars make you feel like a driving god...

The completely stock setup is surprisingly capable around circles! Being able to pass with ease is something like a privilege I'm sure I'll never forget. I wished I'd gotten brakes for the car though. A sub-2 minute lap is definitely possible since I was braking a lot earlier than I normally would.

The brakes went to the floor (green fade maybe?) at the first real braking zone in the first session. It scared the crap out of me lol, so I've had to lift and coast and brake earlier since.

Awesome! Thx for posting!

EDIT: brake fade? To the floor? Please elaborate: fresh fluid? Etc? Possible cause?

This is irrelevant for the 1LE setup since I was in the base 1SS.

But coming down the S/F on lap 1, the car just wasn't stopping as well as I'd like it to. maybe due to the fact that the car's 500lb heavier than what i'm used to, and with twice the power so I reached higher speed on the main straight. The problems wouldn't have existed if I'd gotten some Hawk pads for it.

Possible cause...? Not enough pads for 160+ mph
