Chevrolet dealership told me they don't "lease" Camaro SS

Never heard of this before. Does anyone lease the SS or do you have to purchase?

They said I could technically lease but the payments would be the same as financing, which kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it?

What was the position in the dealership of the person that told you this?

I'm sure if you asked this of the general sales manager you might get a different story. The rates on this car maybe rotten, and it's not worth leasing, but I'm sure that they will write it.

As we approach the end of the model year it might be better to lease a 2018 vs the 17 unless they start giving incentives for the end of year closeout it all has to do with depreciation and residual values

Over the phone salesmen at the dealership. General manager is usually too busy for phone calls so I may have to go in person.

Ah so better to just wait till the 2018 Camaro then? So they do lease then. Are there lease offers because I can't seem to find them on Chevys website or the dealership to give me a straight answer

Dealers make more money out of a lease. It requires better credit though.

They're not really wrong. These cars lease horribly. I looked in to it originally but the residuals are terrible. You can lease luxury cars with higher stickers for less.

What's the cause of this? They depreciate quickly? Wouldn't a lease be good if that was the case so you just bounce out in 3 years before the depreciation gets worse?

No, depreciation never "gets worse". The first year is always the worst, followed by the second and every year after that you're losing less and less value.

I leased my 2017 2SS. You can absolutely lease any new GM car. it's just a matter of what makes the most sense. Anyone that says it's a terrible idea to lease a camaro isn't recognizing that it can make sense for certain people. Not everyone wants to drive the same car for 5 or even 10 years.
That being said, the residual on these cars is low-56 perecent on a 3 year 10k miles per year lease. This drives payments up and discourages leasing the car but also dealerships are very hesitant (in my expierence) to offer a lease. If you think about from the position of the dealership and GM, do they really want to encourage people to commit to a short term "rental" of a 455hp car and then get it back just as the warranty comes to an end?

Most of the luxury brands artificially increase their Residual Value to move their cars. Most BMW dealers lease cars 4 to 1 over financing as an example. Few people would actually buy "new" luxury cars with astronomical long term maintenance that usually accompanies them.

I leased my 2017 2SS for a pretty good price and I also have a few co-workers that got good deals on a 2SS
