Just because it wasn't an early L99 doesn't mean the problem didn't persist with later models, even if it wasn't officially validated by GM engineers.

My justification may have been anecdotal but I saw immediate, dramatic improvement with the fuse pull on my 5th Gen. For something as harmless as a temporary, off-line fuse pull; I fail to see the benefit of ridiculing someone for claiming that it helped. That's just mean and self-serving IMO.

I may not have the Camaro experience that many of you have here but I've been an aircraft and auto mechanic for decades, among other things. Once I get to know my car, I can tell when something isn't right and don't stop until I learn what fixes it. I'll take my butt dyno over someone else's raw, unsubstantiated opinion any day of the week.

After reading the tests that have been done where they introduce dirt before 2 different filters. The stock paper filter ingested .4 grams of dirt in 45 minutes. The K&N ingested 7 grams in 25 minutes. After 25 minutes the K&N was flowing less air than stock. I took mine back out.

So that would mean 6.6 extra grams of dirt are in your engine with the stock filter? Sounds to me like the K&N is doing what a filter is supposed to do.

By ingest. The test is referring to dirt passing through the filter to the motor.

Thanks! I thought that was it but I wanted to make sure there wasn't some other button I missed. So holding it down for 5 seconds turns all the stability and traction stuff off?

To be honest, I think we all kinda know in the back of our minds that the OEM paper filters can filter out way more particles than the K&N filters. However that comes at the cost of restricting air flow. The K&N filter will definitely flow more air...but at the risk of allowing more (and bigger) particles thru it. It is give and take. Even the companies than make intakes, their intakes will allow more dirt and particles in. However, I do feel that those particles are generally harmless. Is a rock or something solid going to make it thru? No. Is anything large enough to damage the engine gonna make it thru? Nope. I've run these filters in cars many times without any problem. I've opened up my stock airbox and found stuff like a leaf or some dust in the bottom of the box. That tells me the K&N was working well enough. So your test was indeed informative. But I don't think that alone would merit running the stock paper filter over the K&N filter at all. I would not hesitate to run a K&N filter.

Very interesting...where was this test, if I may ask, online?

Post #20 i put a link to it. Dont get me wrong i still run a K&N on my 04 f150, and my procharged camaro. But neither car do i consider the motor to be as important. If a filter can pass 7 grams of debris into my LT4 within 25 minutes i just cant justify that. And yes any debris even small particles scratch the inside of the bore. Will it cause catastrophic failure, probably not. Is the filter filtering as well as possible to make good power, i would have to say no.

Really nice info and discussion on air filters, but needs to be in another thread....really gotten .

Cal....are there any nice roads out your area where you could open up the ZL1? I may be out in Emerald Isle later in the summer and was just wondering ....
might try your fuse pull to see if it helps wake up my car, just seems a bit off lately.
