Just Some Muffler Delete Questions

So I'm thinking about deleting the mufflers on my 4cyl. Camaro, watched some clips of muffler deleted Camaro 4cyl. and they all sounded pretty nice, for a 4 cylinders, that is.

I've heard that it is illegal in some states to have your muffler deleted but I don't think it'll sound so loud that cops would pull you over and check if the mufflers still there?

Also, would I have any trouble with the inspections or emissions test? I currently live in TX but will be moving to Cali in the future.

And what are the pros & cons of deleting a mufflers?

Thanks!!!

A muffler delete in California is not going to get his car refereed. The I4's turbo knocks it down way quieter than 90% of all trucks exhaust and civics around here.

Where there is a will there is a way.

Hm, I've read some posts saying that I would not pass inspection/emission test and some says that it's fine even though it is illegal.

I really want to make the car sound better but don't have enough money for a new exhaust system yet, so are there any other options beside cutting the mufflers?

Muffler delete is fine in California and fine for emissions testing as well. The only thing that is against the law is if it is so loud that it disturbs people (which a 4cyl wont...)

So you've got yours done and went through emissions tests and everything? I've seen mixed responses on this topic from various posts, and yeah I don't think a muffler delete on a 4cyl won't be so loud.

Muffler delete may be ok as long as you have separate cats from the muffler. Not sure if it will make your o2 sensor will show anything weird. All my new cars go through a different smog check then my older cars. My new cars, they just hook up to your computer and get all the info they need. My older cars they still run on the dyno looking thing and use the tail pipe sensor.

And if you run into a by the book cop, or you're at a street race event and they start checking the cars, it is a violation,

Not for a 4 cylinder but for a v6 and v8 yes I have owned Camaros with no muffler. Passes emissions just fine in Cali.

Which makes sense because the muffler is just that, it muffles sounds.

Alright, I've found some muffler shops close by, will check them out and hopefully get it done tomorrow, any idea on the price? Like the price range of a muffler delete? $60-$80?

I would say $60-80 would be a good price.

There are several shops on Mason Rd that would be able to take care of this. Meineke is one I have used before, although their welds aren't very "pretty" they do hold up over the years.

Keep in mind you may want to find a shop that can install a Hemholtz style resonator/J pipe. Not sure what the length of pipe would need to be on a 4 cylinder to eliminate drone, or if drone even occurs with muffler delete on a 4 cylinder.

May also try Discount Car Care, however, I'm not sure they work with exhaust.

I just got it done today at Southwest Mufflers & Brakes on Hwy. 6, the welding doesn't look pretty either but I do hope that its holds up. It sounds pretty nice, way better than stock that's for sure!
