I can relate. Got a 1/4" diameter "star" in my windshield on I-15 the other day.

These #@%@ people who absolutely MUST pass, despite me travelling at or a few MPH above the posted, max speed limit......Then of course, pull right IN no more than two car lengths ahead of me. Then SLOW DOWN.

As they crossed the center line they kicked up a rock and there was a loud WHACK as it hit, low on the drivers side. Had it filled at SPEEDY Auto Glass and all one can see now is a bb sized shadow where it hit.

Still pisses me off.

Your chip IS far worse though.

Yeah I'm getting a second opinion and agree that it most likely needs to be filled first given how deep it is.

I've filled chips that deep using only touch up paint. It takes several coats, but it can be done. Fill it most of the way with the color, then the rest with clear. With a little work and the xpel, you'll likely have to look pretty hard to find it. Best of luck!

Yup made arrangements to do just that with the Dr. Color stonechip. He said it would take 1.5 hours and a little patience and magical hands (like a work of art) he said he could get looking 85-90% new again. The cost is $150.00. That works for me. Will post the final results when done.

Please post pictures of the repair before the xpel, if you can...

Stone Chip Final Pictures

Guys,

I got it touched up today. Went with Dr. Color Chip.
http://drcolourchip.ca/en/locations/

Now I know I am going to get a wide variety of opinions on the quality of work but what matters is if I am satisfied. I knew it wasn't going to be perfect BUT I can live with it. BTW these pictures are before the clear bra has been applied.

I am getting the entire front end plus the carbon fiber hood covered with xpel, + front splitter + side mirrors + l/r A pillars + side splitter and rear end quarter panels.

Here's hoping my stone chips days are now in the past.

P.S. Be sure to check out the before pictures posted on page 1 to truly appreciate the end result.

P.P.S. BTW to get the entire hood re painted would of been $600-900 plus it would of never matched so I feel I did the next best thing.

It looks as if you've nailed the coverage, but not sure why it's a darker color. Did DR color chip say that was the exact match color?

The DR. Color chip can match any car manufacturer paint. The challenge is getting the shade color exactly right and how the paint dries. He was telling me that no paint dries the same and this is based on the air temperature and batch(mixture) of paint and some other things I already forgot about...lol.

Once the 'bra' goes on let's see what she looks like then...pics to follow by the end of the week.

A lot of the color change has to do with how the color is now being applied on top of the original color & clear versus primer...what's under the paint is just as important as the color being applied...that's why it looks darker...hence why a repaint is about the only way to fully eliminate/blend...but repainting the hood is expensive and even then it doesn't guarantee a perfect match...

I don't think that's the reason it's darker....The blue is a two-stage paint process when they apply at GM. I doubt that DR took that into account. The reason I know is my Garnet is a 2 stage tintcoat also, and they supply 2 base colors that go on before the clear.

But it looks fine, I imagine you're the only one that will really know going forward
