I did, but I also used to run the part of GM that wrote the service manuals for engines and transmissions, as well as managed the engine and transmission remanufacturing programs, so I had first hand detail on what COULD happen if you don't. Doesn't ALWAYS happen, but it COULD.

At the point that you decide you want to unleash the beast, get your engine oil changed first. Removes any minute shavings that may occur during the break-in period. You don't want any shavings flying around your crankcase at 4,000 rpm.

Congratulations on your new Camaro! I tend to agree with Martinjlm about the break in period. I drove mine the first 1500 miles like the manual suggested and haven't had any problems so far-over 11,000 miles. The GM folks know what they're doing when they write these manuals and most times problems can be avoided in the break in period if one does as recommended. Btw I really like that Artic Blue color. That color would look awesome on a ZL1!! Enjoy your Camaro and treat her good in the break in period. She will love you for it!

Great looking car. I suppose the worst thing that could happen is to have your engine crap out at 36,001 miles because you didn't follow the break-in recommendations. I suppose you could rationalize the engine blew for some other reason, but you would never know. I followed the 1,500 mile break in recommendation and feel good about it. I took it to the drag strip shortly after that and it ran wonderfully well.

The color is KILLER!

Congrats...hope the peeps at Sir Walter gave you a good deal...I went there a month ago for one of the 1LE's they had but were not very helpful at putting a deal together. Good luck...It's a nice color.

In my experience with remanufacturing, issues with not following break-in procedure manifest in the short term (2 - 3 years) in oil consumption issues and sometimes piston slap issues, but most notably in long term (60k - 80k miles) cylinder and ring condition issues. When we get 60k mile blocks in that look like they are 100k blocks, its usually from a long history of oil consumption and rings scraping grooves into the cylinder walls. Our teardown / root cause analysis experts usually attributed this to not properly breaking in the engine and having the rings and seals seat improperly.
