First oil change...I upgraded the oil to fully synthetic Mobil 1 5W30
So I just had my first oil change today as I was nearing my 1000 Km's. I actually took it in at 928 Km's. With that said they were going to use the dex semi synthetic oil BUT I opted to upgrade to the full Mobil 1 synthetic 5W30. What's funny is my first 4 oil changes are free BUT I have to pay the difference to move to the fully synthetic stuff. What I don't understand is why the car wouldn't call for 100% synthetic?
I think the next time I go for an oil change I will pay more to get the Mobil 1 15W50 oil. This oil is meant for supercharged engines. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I'd be curious to know what the Z06 calls for oil type?

I used to run 15W50 Mobil 1 in my performance cars down here in Phoenix where it gets very hot but up in Toronto I don't really see a need to run that thick of oil. If anything, I would switch to the Dexos 2 oil that GM recommends for track use.

I changed the oil and filter at 500 with Castro Edge Synthetic. Currently at 1600 miles and plan to change again some time this week. I realize GM offers a couple of free oil changes; however, I prefer to do it myself.
If you are in the Houston area and wish to do it your self, let me know. You are welcome to use my lift.

Yeah good point about it not being that hot in TO and so wouldn't need the thicker oil. I'll look at the Dexo2 oil when I hit the track.

He told me to get straight HD 30w oil. Never get multi weight. Whenever you get multi weight oil, the additive that makes oil change its weight according to temperature does nothing for lubrication. So you get less lubrication because of the let's say, 5% additives, so only 95% of the oil in the bottle actually lubricates. Is this what you are talking about?

I agree with thicker oil in extreme hot climates like Houston where it gets to 100 degrees for weeks at a time. I have always used 20w50 Castrol GTX most of my life and my cars go for many miles 100K+ and never any problems. Winters are mild so the 20w is just fine.

As an engineer and the engineers I know recommend synthetic for direct injection engines. Coking of the valves have been issues on other engines. Not sure about the LT4. This occurs as regular motor will vaporize some and drop deposits on the valves. If there is no fuel spraying onto the valves that had a cooling and cleaning effect then coking can occur. This brings up the whole catch can debate but that's another issue.

I've used Mobil1 in my new vehicles for years. When their competitors often compare their brand to Mobil 1 then that says a lot. I am 100% positive it is not 100% synthetic, it's still the best. As far as using M1 15w50, go ahead. It will be fine. Especially in hotter climates or when racing a bit.
