Angry Driver Information Center National Backorder

So I've been on here complaining of the issue with my DIC not working properly. 98% of the time it is completely black. When it does come on it may work perfectly for the first 5 minutes of the drive and then either goes out on its own or goes off because you pushed a button that changes ANYTHING on the DIC.

Now the screen blacks out regardless of whether you do anything or not. It could be working, you turn the car off and back on the DIC will not be there again. This is very annoying because, as we all know, all of our important information for the car is on this screen. Most importantly for most who actually drive their car everywhere is the fuel gauge. We can't see our temps or anything. Luckily we still have the analog rpm and speedo gauges.

So with the screen going out there are other things that happen. My HUD does not work and WILL NOT come on unless the DIC is working. Also at night time we all have backlighting on our steering wheel controls. Those are also not working when the DIC is blacked out. Most of the controls on the steering wheel work but not all. My voice control doesn't work on the wheel, volume control and the whatever the control is on opposite side of the volume control. Strangely the heated steering wheel light comes on when you turn the heated feature on. Cruise control works as well, you just obviously can't see it because the DIC is blacked out.

I have taken the car to the dealership of course. Initially they assumed they could fix it via an update to the software. Picked up the car and about 30 minutes down the road the DIC goes out again. I take it back to them and they hook it up to their computer (so they say) and got whatever codes telling them it wasn't working. So because the update didn't work and they couldn't think of any other way to fix the issue they issued some sort of work order with GM to replace the DIC.

I was told the part would take up to 4 weeks to get in. Ok cool deal thats not bad. Well 5 weeks go by and I go in and check on it. They proceed to check and come back to tell me the part is on national backorder and have no clue when the part will be available to replace. Well a few more weeks go by and I go back in. The service guy was very rude and told me "when we hear something, you will hear something". Didn't go ask his manager or anything. Ok cool. The Attorney General of Arkansas is very interested in this case now because of him. They want me to file the paperwork to investigate what is going on and see if they can force the dealership to do something for me. Before doing this I got in contact with the head service manager. He contacted their Regional service director and tagged me in the email so I could see what went on....WELL all that the Regional Director sent back was the national backorder notice and no approximate time on when the part will finally be available.

This is very unsettling because I love my car with a passion. I do not wanna give up this car by any means. But because of this issue I am not able to do anything performance wise on this car because everything requires tuning and that would void my warranty. So I'm stuck until I finally get the part replaced. Which is my deciding factor on seeing what the Attorney General of Arkansas might be able to do for me in getting this issue resolved.

Of course the stealership just wants me to park my car in the back of the shop parking lot and leave it because nobody is sure if the airbag will even deploy because of this issue and some of the controls on the steering wheel not working while the DIC isn't working. I will not do that cuz I don't trust the dealership as I know people who work there and they have told me the managers do take home warranty vehicles and such all the time. My car gets driven by nobody but myself...period.

So after I have ranted about all of this...the main reason for my rambling is to see if anyone on here has had to deal with a national backorder part before and how long it took them to get that part in....

Thank you for reading!

Same thing happened to my screen. They told me the replacement part (amplifier ) is on back order. GM tech line told them that's the problem. Took 2 weeks to get it. Only then they found out that the problem was not the backed order part . It was a simple module in the DIC. Because the module failed it triggered failure to other parts like you described.
Module got replaced and everything was back to normal.

Good Luck

I had a 3 month wait to get a replacement key for a Jeep Cherokee when they first came out. Took it in for service at the dealership that my wife worked at, at the time they lost the key and had to order one.

By any chance do you happen to know what module it might be? If I could have them check this then this whole thing could be resolved hopefully much sooner than later...Because I am waiting on a call from GM and when they called back i fully intended to tell them I no longer want the car and they need to purchase it back from me because I am so tired of all this crap.

I've been waiting for much more than 2 weeks since its on backorder now. I either want it fixed somehow or they can buy the car back from me and Ill go back to a 5th Gen.

Work report says:
"8565 found hmi internally shorted 3421060 0.80 replaced hmi"

A quick Google found this( I'm not sure it's related)

Just as an update to everyone with my issue.

I had a tech from another dealership kind enough to come to my house after he got off work to hook up his stuff to the car up. We checked all the grounds for these modules and systems. Come to find out we didn't have to do all that because the computer told us it was a short to ground from the DIC. It was getting 0.0v to the DIC. These are internal grounds and the only way to fix it is replace the DIC.

Basically I threw a fit about nothing. But the dealership wouldn't tell me any of this even after I asked a bunch of questions. They acted like they didn't know and replacing the DIC was just a stab in the dark. Not the lack of confidence I want to see when people are working on my car.

But now its just a waiting game for the dealership to get the new DIC in......

The national backorder could be because GM found an issue in the DIC and is working with the vendor to get the issue sorted out, that could mean that had to scrap all DIC that were built and are waiting for the revised DIC to be built and shipped.

It sucks for sure. If you open a case with GM once they get you fixed you can ask for compensation for the delay. Never know what you might get from GM.

if that was the case there would be a line stoppage.
a friend of mine works at a dealership. if they wanted too they could get one overnighted to them off the line. thats how he got his 3.91 rear end for his 5th gen. id definitely file the paperwork and it will get fixed the next day GM finds out.

Not entirely true.

I work in automobile production and at our factory we have had to do similar with the door handles... We actually built the handles in house (not typical car door handles, they have a bunch of sensors, a computer, motor etc...). We at one point got so far behind, that an extra shift was added on Saturdays so they can build the handles.

But during production time, The priority goes to the cars being built in the factory... Not the people who already have their cars waiting for door handles, Because otherwise there's a few hundred people without work and the company will lose money by not having cars roll off the line.

So it's very likely they are doing similar, They are building up the amount needed for other people to get their DIC or they may actually be getting ready to do a recall while the cars in production are getting the revised DIC's as they only have enough for those at the time... They won't just send out 1, they will send out DIC's in bulk to all that need them and enough to keep on hand for anyone else to save money.
