Forward Camera

Just finished installing the forward camera/unlock mod by Gen 5 DIY. Still have to button up under the dash, but everything works as advertised; forward camera, rear camera, Pandora, unlock for movie and texting, last two do not recommend. Install was straight forward per their instructions. The front right wheel has to be removed and the whole inside fender taken out. None of this is difficult, but trying to fish the camera line through the frame and up under the dash took two hours trying to find that FN hole to run the wire, frustrating! The taking apart is easy, but reinstalling is time consuming. Plan on five to six hours if you haven't worked on a ZL1, maybe younger guys can do it in half the time. Pictures tomorrow. Only reason to have the camera is to keep from smashing the front end into a concrete parking block.

Front camera is a useful mod esp with the splitter. I've considered getting it and running the wiring through the intake sound tube to the firewall. I think it will become an option in the facelift whenever that happens.

When I had my C6 Z06, which sits a lot lower than the camaro's do. I got in the habit of backing into a parking space, that way I was never tempted pull up that last little bit and damage the front splitter. Front camera is an interesting ad, though.

I work for an electric utility company, our safety policy is to back in all spot or pull thru so you can drive out. I only back into any spot I pull into no matter what car I drive.

I have to back the Camaro into the garage at the house. It goes into our 3rd car bay and only has 8" of total clearance around it. So I back in so I can use the backup camera and put the back bumper almost right on the back wall of the garage each time.

Yeah is this a kit or something that will utilize the Mylink screen or did you have to setup a secondary display for the front cam?

I had them send me another HMI and will return my original. Had to give the VIN for them to program. Kit is complete. Working under the dash is the worst part as the four screws are a b---h to put back in. Camera works well and shows turn line out in front just like the back. Used in yesterday and every time was able to park 1 inch from the parking blocks. As I said before it took me six hours, but 3 should really be the norm. Speaking as an old guy, trying to work under the dash on your back is gruesome! Instructions are very good in that a monkey could do it if you have enough bananas. All is integrated in to your display with an icon for the camera and anytime you touch it it will give you 30 seconds of forward view. Most amazing was just how big the brakes and front suspension components are. Brakes are huge, but don't understand why they didn't use drilled or slotted rotors. According to GEN5 they are working on a PDR for the convertible. Pics are the screen and some suspension.

I try to park like this everywhere, especially if you're in a parking lot with a lot of tight spaces. Reduces a lot of pulling up, backing up, and twisting and turning.

Do you have a link for this? Or did I miss it. The only on that I see on his site is for 5g, it won't even let you put in 16 or 17 for the year.

Gen5diy.com, 928-505-1383, Their pricing is better by phone and for the 17 it is not listed. You can either send in your HMI or have them program one for your car and then you send one back. Not cheap, but they unlock the whole system and now have Pandora link. Another item they sell that I think is useful is the magnetic jack pad that attaches to the bottom seam to jack the car, otherwise bend sheet metal if you try any other place. This is not an endorsement, just the facts.

Thanks. I am interested in the camera for when my wife drives the car. Not interested in the lift pads, I can make those myself. I have some aluminium blocks at work that I can use. I'm assuming the HMIIS the head unit for the radio/nav?
