How to fix this scratch on the paint

Hey, after a very bad day at work I manage to hit a piece of wood in the back of my property, I was going very slow and the piece moved. I was very surprised to see that the paint just chipped off.

Any ideas on how I can fix this? I love my car, had it for over a year and this really hurts.

Short of a repaint it will always be able to be seen, but you can touch it up and minimize it until you have a reason to repaint the cover.

I would knock down the edges of the area with some 2000 grit sandpaper, then wipe it down with some alcohol on a lint free rag. Then with the correct touch up paint and also clear coat start with light coats of paint. It will take a couple passes of paint to build back up level with the edges of the OEM paint.

Then once the paint has dried I would try and find some 3000 grit or higher wet/dry autobody sandpaper and wet sand the brush strokes down on the repaired area lightly, just to level it out. Then once it is smoothed down put a coat of clear on the repaired area and overlap it some onto the OEM paint.

Allow that to fully dry and then use some polish to try and polish the area back up.

Something that big, i would do above but I would tape it off and rattle can spray it. You can get the exact spray to match at automotivetouchup.com. They will also sell you a spray can of clear. 2 coats base, 2 coats clear, wait 30 days then 2000-3000 grit, then polish and seal.

However, it will always look like you did it, a much better alternative is the body shop. Figure 350-400 bucks to make it look like you never hit it.

Hi gmurad!,
I guess you will to have ask a professional bodyshop doing the fix: it will not be necessary to paint the whole bumper.

See you!!,

Follow Glen's advice. The only one that's gonna know it's there is you.

Thanks! I want to try this myself. It's just the first paint scratch and the bumper is a common place to have issues, I will save the big repaint for later.

How about primer before the base coat?

Primer is also a good idea, however for a spot like that if you rough it up , base will work ok. Atouchup Has primer too. You might want to call them.

Just remember after you're done painting, you can't touch it for 30 days with anything. Since you're not baking it, like the original paint, it needs to outgas and harden.

One day I will try and make a vid on how to do this so you won't see it. Maybe try google on how to repair scuffs and chips or paint damage and this will give you a idea of the steps involved. It can be done without getting the whole panel repainted, I will note if using base coat and then clear coat, do not sand or touch the base coat or you will see that through the clear. Also make sure the area around the repair is wet sanded to dull the existing clear coat and do not spray clear on none sanded clear or it will simply flake off. Air brushing with base coat Doing light coats to give you a solid colour is important. You can also buy clear coat and reducer ect and spray using the air brush. Or you can buy the best clear coat ( 2k ) in a spray can with the activator. Just google. Most important is surface prep and sanding flat, you do not want any edges it has to be smooth. Also I will add if using the 2k clear or a properly mixed clear coat you can wet sand and polish to a shine after 8 hours, I have done even in less time using 2k clear.

Just touch it up and move on. Touch up paint is self leveling and if done right it won't be Crazy noticeable.
