315/35R20 on stock Wheels handling issues?
UPDATE: Just feel the need to give an update on this in case someone else found this thread by searching and is wondering the same as I was.
Finally I got rid of my 315/35R20 Toyo Proxes S/T. I put those tire on an OEM 9.5 rim. I did the harness relocation, put 5mm spacer and it was working. It was still rubbing inside when cornering: I could hear the tire rubbing against the inside wall. The handling was poor, the traction not good because it was an all season tire and I felt a loose in performance, especially on initial acceleration. Also, the speedo was off and it can be irritating. Overall, I was just feeling it was denaturating the car and making it not a sport car anymore. I bought 275/35R20 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and they are fantastic. Surprisingly, they are physically as wide as the Toyo Proxese S/T 315/35R20 when you put them side by side. They hook on well on all gear even when it is cold outside or a little bit wet. Far better than the OEM Good Year Eagle F1 AS3 when wet or cold. No comparison. I was thinking buying something cheaper like the Firestone Indy 500 (half the price), but people on this forum did not recommend that and they were back order anyway. So I bought the Michelin. Maybe the Indoy 500 would have been ok, but at the same time I knew going with the Michelin I would not regret it. I also considered something with a lower threadwear, just to be sure they hook well, but I am glad I did not, the Michelin are pefect for me for stock power and daily driving. Just hope they will last more than 1 summer. The OEM did only last one summer. Hi! I have a deal for a set of 2 315/35R20 tires (slightly used, but almost free) and I would put those on my stock 2SS wheels, do the harness relocation and probably put spacers to be sure. I am wondering if I will have handling issue with spirited driving, I am not talking about tracking the car, just normal driving, hard acceleration and spirited driving on twisty roads. Thanks! Finally I got my appointment this morning and installed the tires. I was thinking it was 305, but I was wring, they was 315/35R20, so I was not sure they would fit, but I did remember reading on those forums they were at the limit, so we gave them a try and put them on the OEM 9.5 inches rims.
We reallocated the harness and added 5mm spacer and they fit very well. Night and day as far as traction. |

not a good idea IMO, it will probably be very mushy on those 9.5" wheels and the traction difference is probably because of the better compound. I wouldn't be surprised if you got the same traction from 285/30/20 tires since the effective contact patch would be the same.
It is very hard to quantify that grip difference without comparing actual data in a controlled environment (like a track or figure 8 course) Also, 315/35/20 is a lot of rubber in overall height I am surprised you didn't run into fitment issues

My OEM rear tires was toasted, so I had to change them, almost got those 315 for free, I mean I paid 120$ for both, installation included. Also, not all tire are created equal, side by side with my 275/35R20 Eagle F1, there were not much of a difference in diameter. I would say 315 were taller not even by one inch. The only thing, is my Traction control did flash for maybe 20 seconds driving normally, probably because of the difference in tire height and then it stopped flashing. I need to drive a little bit over 60 mph just to be sure everything is fine, and be sure I do not got a CEL. Also every driving assistance must remains active. Otherwise I would just buy some |

Whoa! I know 315's is the max and a 5mm spacer will be needed to clear the wiring harness.. but on a stock 9.5 rim? That's nuts and I'm glad it's working out for you!

By the way it is not rubbing at all and TC has not flashed again. The look is very good, but the car is more wanky wanky on the back, but that was to be expected with the additional tire thickness.
It a nice experiment for the cost, but next summer, I am going to chnage all 4 tires and put standard 275 or maybe 285 on the back, but not more than that. I'll try to find a tire that is a good balance between durability and performance. |

The wanky wanky is likely from the tires rolling over the rim due to dangerous figment. This is a terrible idea.

Wanky wanky? lol
In all seriousness, 295 would be the most I would put on and I'm sure there will be a very slight bulge.. But I have heard that it is fine. If I don't replace my rims and have to replace my tires.. 285's will fit the 9.5" just as well. |

Those tires do not look too far over the rim though. I do not see much bulging. Maybe the tread is not as wide as most 315's. I am no expert but I have seen alot worse. In his case they wear out faster not a big deal because price was basically free. They are all seasons so doubt he will be tracking the car with them to really push the boundaries. Most likely the tire will lose traction before he is able to roll the tire off the bead from too many g's on a smaller rim.
Honestly from the outside the tire looks good. Does not look like a true 315 width either. |

Yes, it is not optimal, but at the same time, not sure I would say dangerous, I may be wrong, I am not a specialist. I don't see how the tire could pop out of the rim, it is not like if the tire was too small for the rim. Anyway, I can say my Winter tires was a lot more wanly than that.
