I usually push the lock/unlock button on the door handle. Would this help deter theft since it seems like there would be no signal from the keyfob to lock the door? Or is it better to push the lock button on the inside of the door as you get out?

Bravo! Thankfully You were on the ball and AWARE, so heard the car unlocking. I doubt many would have picked up on that.

It IS nice when the Good Guys prevail isn't it. Had several such calls back when I was on the cop job. I always tried to mitigate any BS for the good guys.

I still have the memories of my Mom having her same car stolen TWICE when I was a kid.

It was a 1985 Buick Regal Limited. It was her first car she ever bought that was "fully loaded" with power everything, cruise, tilt wheel, and she was very proud of it. The first time it was stolen from a home and garden center about 4 miles from our house in 1986 when I was 9. She was getting new tomato stakes for her garden, we were in there 10 minutes tops. It had less than 5,000 miles on it at the time.

They found it in the 'hood of Cleveland two weeks later, luckily only missing the wheels, radio, and obviously the steering column was busted up. So it was fixed up perfectly like new and my Mom got it back.

The second time was right out of my Grandparents (her parents) driveway in 1988. It was in the middle of summer, middle of the afternoon, on a hot sunny day. And my Grandfather was on the roof of the garage working on it when the SOB ran up the driveway, got in, hotwired it, and peeled out!!!

Now, my Grandfather was a WWII vet and saw action in New Guinea and Guam so a lowlife thug car thief was nothing to him even at about 65 that he was at the time. I was watching all of this happen with my own eyes at 11 years old as my Grandparent's dog started barking when he ran up the driveway and we all ran to the side porch to see what was going on BTW.....

My Grandfather slid down the ladder, ran into the garage in HIS car which was a beautiful but slow as molasses 1985 Cadillac Eldorado, he peels out of the garage to go after him down the street.

Meanwhile the dog is going bonkers, my Mom is pissed, my Grandmother is confused, and again I'm 11 years old and just like "WTF" lol

So after my Mom called the cops and they came to the house, my Grandfather got back after about a half hour and couldn't find him. After 30 days of not finding it the insurance wrote it off and gave my Mom the check. With which she bought a 1988 Bonneville.

Car thieves deserve to have their finger and toe nails torn out with tweezers and a concoction of salt, vinegar, and rubbing alcohol poured into them.

There's a few different types of scanners that are out there, From what the OP states it seems like that was the kind that picks up the code from the remote as you press it.

There's other types that work as an amplifier to mimic the remote, When you press the lock/unlock button on your door handle the car searches for your key fob to make sure it's in close proximity to the car an amplifier will pick up on that search and extend the range to up to about 500 feet to make the car think the key fob is near the car.

When I did neighborhood watch patrols with the sheriffs department out here, We had a rash of auto break ins by this method... It didn't matter what kind of car it was, As long as the car was key less it could be opened and started (had a new mini pooper and a Lexus GX-whatever stolen and found with no damage but had many cars broke in to from a BMW 5 series, Dodge Charger, Ford F150, Buick Regal etc...)

I don't know how it works but in some cases, Even a key fob works in unlocking the car because they "talk" to each other... I think they keep pressing the button while near the car waiting for it to pick up on the code to unlock it.

There's RFID blocking pouches you can buy specifically for your car that will block the keys signal.

Damn thats wild. I need to look into the auto lock feature. Sounds like its the best way to mitigate the code reading attack. As far as the amplifier, I will be moving my spare key to a different location now....

When I was at school a buddy of mine showed me a software he had on his HP 48sx (school calculator with IR captor to download stuff).
He could copy any IR signal on his calculator being in range of the signal.
We tried,
And he opened my father's car with his calculator....
So everything with remote is not secured
(Car, garage door....)

One thing that bothers me about this was the fact that the idiot thieves repeated their test of their remote with the OP within distance. Most likely, had they waited until he walked away after their first remote activation he may not have noticed.

This was a close call because most likely had the OP not noticed their repeated unlocking of the car, they may have very well gotten away with it.

that would be ok unless it turns out to be the 3 year old next door that doesnt know not to touch the neighbors car...but car thieves should get what horse thieves used to get.
