Good, you are more than welcome to every last one of them. Got to be the most ridiculous looking performance vehicle ever built and likely why it was terminated.

Oh well, its either too ugly or they didn't sell enough of them or both. You never really want to see a performance vehicle go away.

Nah - they just don't make money on them. Same with most halo cars like that. Small production runs, exotic parts, etc. They make them to drive people to buy their lower-tier cars.

Even Chevrolet probably doesn't make a lot of money, and probably loses money, on every ZL1 1LE they'll make. But, it'll drive people to buy an SS or even LT.

So, once they've got some of them out there, and gotten all the press they're going to get out of them, they stop making them.

Do you really think GM loses money on these cars? I fully understand the halo concept but can guarantee you that they do NOT lose money on any of these cars.

Maybe. Maybe not.

I find it hard to believe that GM made any money on my 2SS, though. Simply because I used up SOOO much of the dealership's time over the year that I was shopping, placing an order, monitoring the order, etc. hahaha

You don't believe that GM had a margin on your Camaro because of what you put the dealer through monitoring the progress of your order? You can't be serious.

The halo cars bring in more $$ than the lesser models. It's built into the "upgrade" price. Don't be fooled into thinking otherwise...GM cost for parts if far less than they sell it for retail...that's why packaging it all together and selling it to us for less than we could do it ourselves seems like a bargain...but for them, it's healthy wallet-padding.

The problem with the Viper, and one of the reasons it was killed off, was that they had planned to sell AT LEAST over double what they actually sold to break even...and at the price point they were at, the range didn't support itself.

GM makes money on ZL1s and ZL1 1LEs.....they make a LOT of money...ironically, where they don't make as much....is on the LS models...but selling those at a lower margin allows them to spread out R&D, tooling costs so they can have a healthy margin on the rest.

Good points.

I think it also important to note that the while GM may make healthy margins on their halo vehicles, that doesn't necessarily mean the dealers are. At least not as much as most would think they would for low volume vehicles.

Yep.

Invoice pricing and MSRP seem to be related to each other on a percentage basis...so they stand to make more on a high cost vehicle than they do a low-cost one...but they sell far more low-cost vehicles than high.

To each there own, beauty in the eye of the beholder, etc, one man's trash is another man's treasure, etc, etc....

But I have a hard time seeing the "shopping cart" criticism...to me:

This is a shopping cart:

This just screams motorsport:

It was kinda funny. For years, I ran a regular spoiler on my Trans Am. No one thought much of it. And it helped . . . I guess.

Then, I got a wing for it. It was 2nd-hand, but the price was right (ie: "free"). Then, I started winning races. I'm under no illusions that the wing suddenly made me that much faster. But, next thing you know, all the BMWs, RX-7s, and Vettes are putting wings on. Kinda funny.
