Have an SS, should I pull the plug on a ZL1?

So a few questions. My 1SS was bought with cash, it's fully paid off, has a 100,000 mile warranty. It has 7,700 miles on it. I got it last February.

How much would it be trading it in? How much would it be selling it privately and which should I do?

I will be buying the ZL1 with cash as well if I do end up pulling the plug.

Is there anything else I should know, do or any advice before doing so?

I'd bet your 1SS is probably worth around $29-30k in trade depending on dealer location/market and 32k private.
It may be worth trading if you only have to pay the difference in tax for your trade offer and new car price. Trade offers can vary greatly between dealers. If they try and low-ball you, take your business elsewhere.

The ZL1 is definitely worth the upgrade IMO!

Previous Customer who has bought two Camaros from the same dealership in cash. I called the guy I usually work with, said I want between 30-32k for a trade in, he said with the miles and condition that it's most likely do-able and since it's end of the month they could probably go the extra mile for me.

I said I will pay in cash but they have to take the 5k premium off the car like they did when I bought the SS.

Paying cash does not help you negotiate. In fact, it hurts you, the dealer makes less money on a cash deal and prefers customers who finance. There is more revenue in finance than the mark up on the car. Also, good luck finding a ZL1 for 5k off the sticker...... If you get to pay MSRP, then consider yourself lucky. I saw some on the internet yesterday for 10-12K over MSRP. This car is not sitting around on a dealer lot waiting on a buyer, if you find one at a dealer, not already spoken for, say "yes please" for whatever they are asking and consider yourself one of the lucky few!

Never been one to finance a car, car payments are completely useless if I can just pay in cash. If they don't like my price range, I walk out and go to the dealership down the street who has some as well.

I know for a fact I will get the premium off the car, there's no reason for it to be there and I won't pay for it, unless they offer me something for free.

This would be my 3rd Camaro from them and I'm hoping to get a deal done.

I don't like a car payment either. I always save until I'm ready to buy. My point is that cash doesn't motivate the dealer. This car is in high demand and if you think you're getting 5k off sticker.... Well, good luck with that. If you can get it for sticker, take it before someone else does.

It sounds like you've already made your decision. I went from an '16 SS to a '17 ZL1, so I know where you're coming from.

Just keep in mind that not every aspect of the ZL1 is better. With the high-bolstered seats and side skirts, they're much harder to get in and out of. The front splitter requires some extra attention while driving to avoid damage. Also, if you're getting a 6-speed, the higher first gear takes some getting used to. It's not too far off from taking off in second gear with the SS. I didn't notice much difference with the suspension and the shorter-throw shifter. And personally, I didn't care for the suede, but most people really like it.

Don't get me wrong. The ZL1 is pretty awesome, but beware there are at least a few sacrifices coming from the SS.

Oh... and my insurance went up about $40 a month vs the SS.

You can always finance to get the best price and incentives and just pay it off after a month or two.

There's a good price paid thread to show what people have been able to get out the door. Under MSRP by about $2k isn't too rare. That said, no way I would have paid over MSRP.

I came from a 5th Gen SS making more power than the ZL1, and this was still hands down an upgrade in almost every way.

Pretty sure the OP was saying the dealer has a 5k mark up on the car and that he would only consider buying if they remove that ADM. So, if the dealer won't sell it at MSRP, they're crazy. Most dealers across the country will sell it for MSRP all day long.

I got mine for a little over 3600 below MSRP with supplier pricing and GM financial offer. Of course the dealer is basically getting full price in the end, since the discounts come from GM. If I had owned a 99 or newer Chevy, I think that was the year, I could've gotten another 1500 off. I tried to argue that our Escalade was a GM vehicle, but it doesn't count. Has to be a Chevy.
