2SS with coil overs and square stance VS 1LE?

Which is going to handle better?

A 2SS with aftermarket coilovers and aftermarket wheels/tires (285's) front and rear - or a 1LE?

1LE wasn't available when I bought my car - so I'm trying to make it more capable.

Discuss... :-)

Too many variables. What coilovers? What wheels/tires?

I'll go ahead and assume the 1LE would handle better. GM has put a lot of R&D time into that car, exactly as it sits. How much R&D time has gone into your exact setup that you're questioning? Probably none.

you can put 1LE type handling in an SS. I think the suspension kit is like $1300 from the GM parts guy. Wheels, tires and brakes you could get as well.

I think they are going to be too close to call assuming the cool overs where spec'ed and tuned right !

Normally camber makes a big difference in cars like this. Not sure how much you can get from the factory set-up or if anybody makes camber plates for it. If so more negative camber and coil overs with the right rubber will do better than a 1LE.
See what the SP autox guys and road racers are doing with this platform and copy proven set-ups !

Found a T2 road race build.

They used the factory lowering kit
http://m.chevrolet.com/performance/c...arts/2016.html

And the article says they could get up to -3 camber so no camber plates are needed.

I would be tempted to go that route or buy the 1LE package from Chevy over coil overs.

I'm running 2.5 degree negative camber in front and 1.4 degrees in back with a little negative tow in front.

KW V3 coilovers which are compression and rebound adjust. about 1" drop front and rear.

There are a lot of factors here, including what type of handling you want to measure.

Magnetic shocks, tuned springs, sways, and tires are huge for sure, but you also need the brakes (despite my co-worker's stance, brakes are in fact not a sign of weakness lol).

You can make a SS an unbelievably well handling car, but it will take a little effort to match the 1LE...

Good article on the T2 but I wished they were more involved, like settings, sway bars etc.

I've got the GM Performance Lowering Kit and like it very much. It is stiffer than stock but the strut/shock combo works as well as the stock set-up.

Good to know - thanks for the feedback. I will probably go with the GMP kit as well since they have a convertible specific kit for the SS.

Agree on the T2 article but can't blame them for not giving away all their secrets !

As for brakes - 4 piston brembos with right pads and some cooling should be all you need !

I used to road race a stock class Camaro and stock 3rd gen calipers and rotor size did just fine with the right pad and ducting and we were running pretty damn fast lap times considering the 250hp motors in those cars !
