I just got the "service power steering" issue. My camaro SS just hit 4700 miles. One day I was driving and the same service message popped up on my dash. Next thing I knew it felt like I was driving a tank. I pulled over, turned the car off and restarted it. The problem went away.

Yesterday, I got the problem again twice (same day) and I drove it straight to the dealer. From what it seems, I think this is a Chevy/GM issue because I have now heard this happening to all chevy model vehicles not just camaros. Anyways, will post what the dealer tells me when I find out. Thank goodness it this happened under warranty.

Heard back from the dealer....

Yes, the steering gear had to be replaced. I got my camaro back today and that was the cause. They said it was a internal torque sensor malfunction inside the steering gear.

Mine went out last night, my steering wheel was vibrating even when car was off and I'm guessing power steering motor was running really loud with car off at front passenger side of engine bay. Car ran fine this morning of course when I went to drop it off at Chevy dealer

I just contacted a Lemon Law lawyer about this same issue. My car has done this 3 times. Same part has failed 3 times. Part "A" is causing part "B" to fail... but part "A" can't be found. If your power steering goes out... like mine, you may be in for a lot of trouble. Their "FIX" might only be temporary. Good Luck.

This just happened to me this morning.
It wasn't fun when trying to muscle the steering wheel to avoid hitting a curb with a semi behind me (going around 5 mph)!

Thanks for the info OP, I'm taking my car to the dealer tomorrow!

Just got back from the dealer. They said they couldn't pull any codes, couldn't replicate issue and they found no bulletin for it. So my car is returned unfixed.

For those who had their steering gear replaced, how did you convince the dealer, or what did your dealer do to have it replaced?

Your help is much appreciated!

I almost hit the curb during a middle of a turn when I lost power steering. Worse yet, the semi would have rear ended me...

Meanwhile I'm going to contact Chevy directly; now they're able to see my issue reported through the dealer.

I've noticed the no.1 culprit is the torque sensor being defective.

No.2 Main power plug at rack motor not fully seated. You could check that yourself if you want.

Check that no pins backed out of the plastic connector.

Thank you camaro5; this is very helpful!

I just got off the phone with service manage on this particular TSB you provided; and they're seeing it a bit different (software vs hardware), saying that it calls for a software update and mine is all updated when they checked yesterday.

I'm going to check my car and see if the Main power plug at rack motor isn't fully seated later today. Meanwhile, I'm waiting to see if I get a response directly from Chevy.

Thanks again!

I was lucky(?) enough to have my power steering go out on the way to my dealer, so they could feel and see first hand what was going on. I left without it being fixed, and continue to have the issue, but if I choose to get it fixed my dealer is aware of the issue.

TWick72, did you drive to the dealer without power steering? If so, you've got some real muscles!... lol

I suspect that there might be more Camaros out there with the same issue.

I'd encourage those who has this issue, to report it to GM directly, in addition to dealer visits, to record the issue. My guess is that if GM finds out there's a number of occurrences with the same issue, they would issue a TSB (or even a recall) to fix it.

It looks like this is the only way to get this issue fixed. This is a serious safety issue!

My 2017 is in right now getting steering gear replaced. Be a couple days to get the part in. They seemed to know exactly what was wrong.
