there are scenarios where it is possible but it is hard to see how the numbers would add up for a 19 yo unless they started their job making killer money. For that scenario most businesses would be looking for experience or a degree so again hard to see how that works out given the short amount of work history a 19yo would likely have. All that said saving is key and had i started saving at 16 when i started working i could have bought one cash by 19. Good on you who were able to save

Not too long ago, a 22 year old bought a brand new ZL1 with his own hard-earned money. He put half down, financed the rest, and diligently payed each month with additional principal piled on top.

...That 22 year old was me. And I never heard the end of the half-joking "drug dealer" or "daddy" comments. And now...not for anything, I'm buying two cars within two months, and I'm hearing the same sort of rhetoric. Quite irritating, really...

Just let people enjoy their cars...if they do something stupid; then get judgmental.
I am NOT "judging" anyone, merely making a general, common sense orientated statement that most will agree with. This was in regards to someone who is the age of 19 not 22. There is a huge difference. At 19 I was an irresponsible punk and at 22 was pursuing a graduate degree while running a very profitable business. The difference between late teens and early 20s can be like decades. I will solidly stand by my statement that a 19 yr is not going to be financially able on his own to support himself and pay for a 60-70 thousand dollar toy without donations or ill gotten gain.

Makes sense to me. The car note is one thing. If you live with Mommy and Daddy who cover the mortgage, utilities and property taxes it makes the purchase of a ZL1 even easier. I had my first IROC this way. Seen lots of sweet cars in front of sweet homes on this site. Have also seen some where it appears the car cost more than the home. Everyone's want and situation is different.

Oh, OK. In what world is a 19 yr old living off his parents dime but purchasing a $65,000 car an acceptable way for a person to begin their adult financial life?

Wasn't aware there was a rulebook?

Back in the 80's I was checking out cars at a used car lot in Sunnyvale CA. A limo pulls up and a kid about 16 gets out with his dad. Kid walks into the office, picks up a set of keys and jumps into a Pantera. He can't drive a stick and kills it about 3 times getting it off the lot. The dad looks at me and says "Well, he'll win races with his friends in that!" I was only on my mid 20's, but I looked at the dad and said, "If he doesn't kill himself in it."

The dad looked at me like, crap, never thought of that. Got back into his limo and gets driven away.

Lots of big money here in the SF bay area. I get up on highway 9 and 35 a couple times a year on my bike. Seems like everytime i'm up that way i see a Porsche or Ferrari wrapped around a tree or another car with a young person next to it with the "holy crap" look on his face.

It's not a book, its called common sense. I have found this to be an extremely rare commodity in the minds of most under 30.

Not disagreeing.

Just taking a bit of an issue with your generalizations. There are always outliers, both positive and negative.

I happen to be one of them, and that may be why I feel compelled to reply to your statements...

I am not questioning what you did at age 22. Exactly what vocation does a 19 yr qualify for that provides him with an income that would cover all his living expenses and the financial obligations that accompany the purchase of an approximate $65,000 vehicle?
