I debated that too...but I wanna do a G-Body drag car build instead. So the SS 1LE will be staying with me for awhile...

thanks for keeping us updated. I know the wait sucks :/
like others mentioned it's good that GM stands behind their cars even for track use so hopefully it will all be left behind.. there's always a margin of error and it seems like that error happened to your car . I have a track event coming up this weekend, fingers crossed

So will you need another 1500 miles of <4000 rpm to consider the new engine broken in or is some of that more for other parts of the drivetrain.

Exactly my point Eric SS. The load/no-load situation is when the engine is under the MOST stress. If there is a defective part in the engine from the beginning (and I think we can all agree now that there was) this is the type of situation where the failure will occur. Going from nearly WOT to part throttle/no throttle in and of itself does not cause engine failure and I never meant to imply that it did, only that certain areas of the performance envelope will expose a defective part (in Vintages case, a bad piston).

Really wished they had told you specifics about what about the piston actually failed. Ringlands/wrist pin or C-clip/broken skirt/etc or possibly a dropped valve. I've seen pics of various LT1 damages and am slightly concerned about the motor's component QC and quality.
What are the factory pistons made up of...are they hypereutectic pistons? I read sodium-filled and nitrated valves are present, both having their advantages and disadvantages. Wish you luck on the continuing saga; but in the end, I'm sure they'll come through with that new motor. |

+1! No motor is infallible, well, perhaps for LS6 ![]() The key here is the cause. Was it something as "simple" as a valve spring (as was a case with 02 LS6), or was it an internal component? Was it related to manufacturing, or assembly process? Etc. Vintage, if yours is indeed the first failure: have patience as GM has to figure it out and that takes time. BUT, they should be treating ya with golden gloves regarding client satisfaction. NB when that guy's GT350 erupted in flames while ON TRACK, Ford (apparently) replaced it with a new GT350R. Not a bad outcome.... |

It has been confirmed to me that my 1LE LT1 failure is in fact the 1st. This stuff happens - just want my car back in one piece to TRACK it often. Now, if I can just resist the ZL1 1LE . . . If a new Z28 comes out - I am buying one.

Good and bad. Good that it is a rare occurrence, bad that it had to happen at all. Hopefully things pick up from here on out and you can break in the new engine.

Nothing special about the LT1 in the 1LE vs a regular SS, and some have let go in the regular SS before you.

Received the call at 11:15 this morning - Chevy has approved the warranty claim and all new parts are shipping this week, which includes a new motor. Thank you Big Al and Chevrolet. I will be a life ambassador at the track!
I am told it will be about 2 weeks from today before I have the 1LE back depending on when all parts are received. We shall see but at least things are starting to happen now. I am very grateful for this car, Chevrolet, and the track warranty! I did ask again what specifically failed - he does not know other than some part failure related to piston #3. Maybe GM will figure it out when they get the motor back? |
