Aschenbach Debuts All-New Chevy Camaro in Sensational Style With GTS Pole Thursday at St. Pete PIRELLI WORLD CHALLENGE STAFF March 9, 2017 GTS Class, Series News ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Two-time GTS Driver Champion Lawson Aschenbach of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., captured the pole position at the first GTS qualifying session of the season Thursday in the all-new Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R sports car during the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Presented by Case●It at the harborside, 1.8-mile temporary street circuit. Piloting the pretty No. 10 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R, Aschenbach wrangled the top spot from a highly-competitive GTS field Thursday afternoon with a new qualifying track record time of one-minute, 18.855-seconds at 82.17 miles per hour. In the 20-minute qualifying session, the four-time PWC series titleholder made only five qualifying laps but the fourth circuit was the quickest and became the first GTS racer to break the one minute, 19-second range. The old mark was set in 2015 by Dean Martin in Ford Mustang Boss 302 at 1.19.001 (82.02 m.p.h.). “Obviously, it is very exciting to get pole in the first race debut weekend,” said Aschebach, the former Vanderbilt graduate. “It’s important we have success with this car for everyone involved in the program. Starting this weekend, we knew the car was pretty close to what we needed. It’s pretty surprising to roll out of the trailer and know we have a car that is going to be fast. It’s a testament to everyone at Blackdog Speed Shop, Chevrolet, Pratt & Miller, and everyone involved in this program, to be able to come out and be ready to go. Getting the pole is a pretty good feeling. We care about the race more than anything else and we really want to win this one for everyone involved.” Sixteen-year-old Parker Chase of New Braunsfels, Texas, battled Aschenbach for the top spot in the grid with a 1:19.093 lap (81.92 m.p.h.) – 0.238-second behind pole – in the No. 19 Performance Motorsports Group Ginetta G55. Rounding out the top five in the 19-car field were veteran Andrew Aquilante of Chester Springs, Penn., at a 1:19.230 (81.78 m.p.h.) in the No. 32 Phoenix Performance Ford Mustang Boss 302, 2016 multi-time GTS race winner Jade Buford of Nashville, Tenn., at 1:19.538 (81.47 m.p.h.) in the No. 45 Racer’s Edge Motorsports SIN Car GT4 and former GTA class champion Frankie Montecalvo of Highlands, N.J., at 1:19 805 (81.19 m.p.h.) in the No. 13 ANSA Motorsports KTM XBow. The first GTS race of the year for the Pirelli World Challenge is scheduled for Friday at 12:15 p.m. ET. MotorTrendOnDemand will live-stream the event; this and live TSL Timing and Scoring links can be found on the PWC St. Petersburg event page. I'm guessing these cars started out the stock blue Camaro color....The silver/grey matte wrap has been cut away and the edges covered with the yellow stripes...
....and they kept the ZL1 badge in the grille.... Attachment 856800 Well, I guess it started out a white car, not blue....lol... Last edited by 90503; 03-10-2017 at 09:36 AM. |

GM’s most recent experience with customer race car sales has been with the COPO Camaro, a race-inspired Camaro for the drag strip, which it has limited sales to 69 cars per year based on initial interest.
“We’re going to do something similar with this; we’re going to try and identify the market and see how many we can really sell,” Kent*said. “If you’re only producing four of five, you take this approach. But if you’re producing 400-500, you take a different approach altogether. “We’ve got to identify that. But we hope it’s a big market.” --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a great idea....I've posted numerous times in the Z/28 forum that something like this will be where the next Z/28s might come from....Custom made track only cars...I hope this program is successful and expands to the Z/28.... Thanks Mountain for the link and post.... Last edited by 90503; 03-14-2017 at 08:57 AM. |

While I love the idea of the this car being sold to the public, I beg GM to not make this the future of the Z/28 as they did with the COPO.
The original COPO's came with a VIN and were licensed for the street though they were mostly barebones for the strip. The new COPO moved to a place that only 69 people can own and then it has no VIN and can't be tagged which is a shame in my opinion. To follow the same path with the Z/28 would be a shame as I believe their is a happy place between what this car is and what GM is planning with the ZL1 1LE. The Z/28 should be a minimalistic, streetable, light, N/A, car that I can drive to the track, run all day long, and then drive it back home....like I could my Gen5 Z/28. Yes. they made too many of the Gen5 Z/28's BUT if they can only produce 69 COPO's and justify it, then they should be able to make 1000 Z/28's and justify that as well. Just my thoughts. |

I see a coolant reservoir with Stant cap. Is that an oil tank for dry-sump? I see an all-aluminum radiator using the stock rubber grommet isolation. Back towards the fire-wall, is that a catch-can? I would love to know what they're doing for an oil cooler! I'm digging the carbon fiber air tube and airbox.
