How is oil consumption?

With so much focus on catch cans I've started to wonder if these engines consume oil at a faster than "normal" rate. Anyone with observations on this?

Already been through this before with my present car. Before I pull the trigger want to understand if anyone has noticed potential issues. It may be too early to know. Honestly don't know how long this particular engine has been in production.

May want to ask a mod to move this out of the 1LE section...as the engines are the same in all SS's.

My SS has about 5000 miles, it used about 3/4 quart over the first 1000 miles, none since...

I did not do an easy break in by any means either. My car was at the autocross track when it had 60 miles on it. IMO babying the car during "break in" is not the best way to go. I know this is very debated, but that is my opinion as someone who has actually built engines. Machining tolerances these days are fantastic. I have always done this hard type of break in with my modern cars, with great results...

Some good reading here: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I've only got 500 miles on my SS 1LE so far, just checked the oil again...it hasn't used any. Oil level is still like 85% or so up the dip stick...

around 1500 miles I was right around 1 quart low. I'll check again before I do my first oil change and let you guys know how it looks.

3000 miles and no sign of consumption (been checking every 500 miles).

Just checked mine, at about 1000 miles and it's above the fill line, will probably need some if I wait for 1500 to do the first change but I'm probably getting it done sooner.

It is typical for them to use more than normal in the break-in phase.

What do you consider the fill line? Below the cross hatching? From what I have read, the cross hatching from bottom to top represents 1 quart.

Can someone confirm that the oil capacity is 10 quarts on the 1LE? Due to larger oil coolers etc I would assume?

I can confirm. I changed my oil yesterday. I'm glad I have an 11 quart capacity drain pan...

hmmmm then maybe mine is a little low, it was about mid-way up the cross hatching. But like I said I'm going to do the break in oil change very soon, and my car isn't getting driven a ton due to the weather.

If you're half way up the crosshatching I wouldn't add any oil. The dip stick can be tuff to read. If anything maybe you are like 1/4 quart low. Hard to say...

Thinking I'm gonna change my oil at 1000 miles. 500 seems too short, 1500 too long.

Yea that sounds about right to me, I will be hitting 1000 by the end of the week, so I may take it by the dealer after C&C on Saturday.

What oil is everyone running?

I have 650 miles on my 1LE and just drained and switched to Mobil 1 0W-40 partially because I'm doing a track day on Saturday. The OEM oil looked pretty good, albeit a bit dark for only 650 miles.

After the track day, would you guys recommend switching back to 5w-30 dexos2?

I lost half a quart in the first 500, nothing since and I am at 3000.
I had the oil changed at 1600 and hadn't checked it in at least 500 before that, so my number may be off a little.
