To be clear, I rank my priorities as such:

1. Low Crime-Rate
2. Good Public Schools
3. Length of Commute

So I am willing to live further out and the commute if I know my daughter is in a safe area and going to a good school. I can be convinced to send my daughter to private school but then I'd need to be making more money.

Living in the suburbs does not shield you from crime. In fact, some areas on the suburbs can be quite bad, mainly in the areas close to the Sam Houston tollway. As housing values continue to go up in the city, the poor people get pushed out to the burbs. With them comes the crime. Yeah, the school districts in Pearland and Katy are thought of as better, but within those districts, you have better and worse schools. Some of their schools have rough elements, including gangs. Others are better. For instance, if in Katy, you are better off south of I-10 in areas like Cinco Ranch. In Pearland, you are better off in the eastern part than you are in the west (Pearland High way better than Dawson). Just do your homework on the specific schools you would be zoned into when looking at houses. Friendswood is a very nice area by the way, but your commute will be very bad.

If you choose wrong in the burbs, you could very well end up with a long commute, a bad school and high crime. Trust me, it is out there. Houston is a very big area so you are going to have to really do your homework.

Kingwood and Friendswood would by my top two choices if I had to move back to the burbs, but just know that long commutes will come with the territory.

I live in Spring by the Woodlands and love my neighborhood. This is basically North of Houston and is quiet and peaceful. I moved to Tx in 2005 from Northern California right after hs and military and would not consider living anywhere else. The weather (I love warm weather year round), car scene, cost of living is just unbeatable. Try to get use to the horrible, disrespectful drivers though I'll warn you ahead of time. No one uses turn signals (very, very annoying) and they love going under or right at the speed limit in the fast/passing lane. Nothing like I90, I5, or 405 in Seattle lol.
