2017 SS 1LE vs C5 Corvette Z06 - should I trade my Corvette?
After reading all of the media reports and tests the new Camaro 1SS 1LE really tempts me. To do the deal I would have to trade my '04 Corvette Z06 and my '15 Camaro 1LS. Has anybody gone from a C5 Z06 to a SS 1LE? If so, what do you think? Especially if you went from an '04 Z06 which had the revised suspension for a more compliant ride and better handling. I looked at 1SS and 2SS Camaros last year and wasn't impressed, especially when after driving them and getting back in to the Corvette, the Corvette felt so much lighter and part of me. Looking at the specs, acceleration and handling are pretty close with the Camaro winning out after getting above 60 or so. Also, I am not totally sold on the dash, rear seating and trunk size of the new Camaro vs what I have in my 2015. I bought the 2015 LS with 6-speed manual as a daily driver for my 95 mile commute, but I have been working from home for the past year or so and hardly driving either the Corvette or the Camaro so it is pretty hard to justify both. On the other hand, I bought the Corvette new, it just turned over 50,000 miles and I have had zero problems with it - no trips to the dealer for anything. Given the much greater cost of the Corvettes these days than when I bought it, if I trade it I would not be able to get another one so I want to be very sure of the decision before getting the new Camaro. BTW, I have not yet driven the new 1SS 1LE but a local dealer has several. Since I work for GM and with the rebates out there, the cost is pretty much a wash - trading both would cover the cost of the new one. BTW, the Corvette is Millineum Yellow and my Camaro is Red Rocks Metallic, both colors that I love, they have some nice colors on the new Camaro as well.

I traded my C6 60th Anniversary 427 convertible for the 2 SS convertible, and then through a Maggie on it. I can tell you I love to drive the Camaro and don't miss the vette at all other than the uniqueness of the 427. A much better ride, more room, plenty of performance, and the S/C much faster. It is a different car, but I have no regrets.

Camaro vs Corvette
For what it's worth, I think the difference in overall driving experience, between a Corvette and Camaro is less than it's ever been. But my only ownership experience comes from comparing a '92 'Vette to a 98 Z28 to a '16 2SS Camaro.... Just an impression from owning them and reading about them.

Haven't driven a C5 but that's because I don't like the interior or exterior aesthetically. I did drive a C7 GS though and it was more of a sportscar, you sit low to the ground and there is less weight up front which would be good in the transition. Lots of road noise. The 1LE feels more comfortable and conventional, like a cross between a BMW and a 5th gen. Supposedly easier to control at the limits but I haven't approached them yet.
Take a test drive and you should know for sure. |

I had a clean 49k mile 02 Z06 that I sold last year and went to my 17 2ss manual. They are about the exact same straight line power wise, neither one seemed faster. I loved my c5z and it had a lot more potential to be faster but I wanted something more modern.
For me op it's a toss up. My ss is down now getting a shi* ton done to it where I will probably be 730 rwhp. I don't think you could go wrong either way being honest. Test drive a 1ss, 2ss and test drive mrc and non mrc. You might wanna look at A8 vs M6 too, although for me an auto is 100% out of the question. |

I bought a 2004 z06 new but sold it after about a year for what I paid for it
Ended up in two C6 Z51 manual coupes along the way. Now have a SS vert gen 6. To me it's all the performance of a C6 with a far stiffer chassis and much better interior and fit finish materials. I prefer the SS to the C6 which I felt was a better car than the Z06 C5. So I would do the two for one swap in a heartbeat and not look back. |

I had a C5Z....great car, bang for the buck nowadays is fantastic as they are cheapish...
But, my SS 1LE has much more grip, and far better braking. Plus, that cheapo C5 interior was awful... |

Actually I am pretty sure the 1LE SS does accelerate faster than a non-1LE SS since it has 3.73 rear gears that the non-1LE cars don't get. Also with the wider and stickier tires that also help with traction it gets off of the line faster as well.

I also came from a 2008 C6 Z51 to the SS 1LE. The 1LE feels every bit as fast as the C6 in all areas, handling is a night and day difference over the C6. That is to be expected though as there is almost a 10 tear generation gap in technology between the two cars.
With minimal mods the 1LE really wakes up and does so fast. I can tell as the break in miles come on and drivetrain loosens up some more it is only going to get faster and more fun to drive. |

That c5 would make a real nice track toy as well. I feel bad beating up my new 1le. 50k on the vette would be a great platform for track use. To me it's the best for the money on the used market. Reason is because values dropped significantly. Is it worth it for you to trade it in? I know you can't justify having the z06 and the 1le, but the dealer will prob offer you below 10k for it. Personally I'd keep it. You owned it since new, not a problem with it. You took the hit in value already. Might as well mod it and make it bananas

FYI the regular SS has 3:73's as well. The tires (and possibly eLSD) may help off the line acceleration a little though...

Now I might not have exactly the experience you are looking for here, but I did have a 2004 Z06 less than 2 years ago and I now have a 1SS Camaro. It is however a supercharged Callaway edition and undoubtedly faster than the C5Z which may sway my opinion. From what I can tell the Camaro handles every bit as well as the vette did and probably even better. Looking at track times online tells the same story. I mean yes the vette is smaller and lighter, but we are talking about a 13 year old car here compared to new technology. Not to mention the interior and new user interface tech that others have mentioned.
Another reason my judgement may be skewed is that I traded that C5Z on a boat Hellcat and going from that to the Camaro makes the Camaro feel like a go kart. Once again though, the online track times don't lie. Definitely go test drive a new 1LE and I say make the upgrade! Gotta be careful with that comparison, M6 to M6 yes, but watch out for the A8. |

I would keep the C5Z if it is problem free. I loved mine when I had it.
