Powerstop Trackday Pad Noise, Question for track veterans

I just installed the PST-1405 for the 6 piston/14.6'' slotted rotor option on my car. Went out to bed them properly and noticed a noise I was not expecting. Now when I apply the brakes, it sounds like back in the day when you would put a card in your bicycle spokes

Best I can tell it is because of the slotted rotors, but I am not quite understanding why. Any help from the track vets? Could it be just because of the bedding process and the heat in the rotors?

I know they're a track pad, and noises are expected, but this is not the one I expecting to hear.

Edit: it is not a loud noise, but is audible to others, not just a drivers cabin noise.

I just installed the z26s 2 weeks ago for 4 piston ss w/vented only and noticed a small groove about a mm by 3/8" wide today.. thinking its going to be pad clips. Let me know what you find out, ill be back into brake shop monday fo sho with update

Wow. That rotor is eaten (not just in the 3/8ths region). Is that all from these pads, or did you have other abrasive pads before too?

Took a few photos, nothing out of the ordinary, only thing I notice is the squealers are now on the top of the pad, whereas they were on the bottom with the OEM pads, but to my knowledge pads aren't "directional" ?

You put these on after the OEM pad? Sounds like its the new pad not being compatible with the OEM pad. As long as you determine it isnt something loose somewhere, I would drive the track pad around for a while without bedding them in or braking too aggressively. You want to keep using them while they're cold. The track pad (if its truly an aggressive track pad) will cut everything off the rotors, then you can try re bedding them. I know people that keep a set of track pads around specifically to cut deposits and such off their rotors.

That's correct, these went on after I ran through the set from the factory.

It has been rainy here, so I haven't been driving it, but I kind of have the same feeling that over time with normal driving it will probably subside.

I also didn't have any of the pad grease to use when I put them on, I have since bought some and will put that on the back of the pads and all the hardware as well. Although I don't think that is the cause. But who knows, I had the rear replacement pads in for a week with the grease and they made no noise, but they're also a solid rotor.

its not the grease (I dont even use any, it burns off), its swapping pads on the same rotor. just keep driving for a while.

Also, what lugs are you using with your wheels?

Although the transfer layer looks decent in the pictures, it's possible the break-in was inappropriate given you already had a transfer layer from the previous pads. You really need to wash and steel wool the rotor prior to running different pad brands to fully remove the old pad transfer layer.

However, it's also key to note the card in bicycle spoke noise can also be the floating rotor hardware making noise. It happens, but if it didn't happen with the prior pad, I wouldn't expect it from just a pad change.

Just for safety, go back and check all your hardware torques and line clips and make sure something wasn't missed.

What hardware are you speaking of in particular?

The 6 pistons just have the 2 pins and the sprung retainer to remove and replace, the pads are drop in. I did use the new pins that came with the pads, I sized them versus the oem ones, and noticed no difference in the 2, so I don't think that could be the problem.

All of it: struts, caliper bolts, rotor hats, wheel lug torque. Just make sure something didn't come loose. Given you didn't touch any of it, the probability of it being the improper break-in procedure instigating the noise is much higher. Clean those rotors of all the bedding and do it again.

Checked all hardware, guess it's time for the steel wool.

The " out of round" sound is me just having put the wheel back on loose for rotational mass to keep it spinning, not all lugs were tight.

It sounds like this constantly, and obviously gets louder as I brake.

I've had the same noise with my 6 pots since day 1. Stock pads. Only difference is, mine is quiet when the brakes are applied. I'm curious to see what
Although, it's worth noting the wheels will make a clicking noise under hard cornering if the mating surfaces of the wheel/rotor/hub aren't perfectly clean and lugs torqued properly. There's a TSB on this issue.
