If they don't make a manual, can they still charge you to upgrade to an automatic. Things that make you say hmmm.

It would be lumped into the MSRP of the car.

same boat is AC, onstar, xm and rear window defrosters .... they're "standard options" because marketing people dont know the definition of oxymoron ...

It would be wonderful to not pay for things you dont want.

They're not technically minded, so the thought of learning to drive a manual is terrifying to them when they've grown up learning that, to get what they want, all they have to do is push a button. They're less intelligent, in a way, because they were never taught to think or figure things out.

They have their education paid for by someone else, and their first car is bought for them. Automatics are just an easy answer to getting from A to B. They'll never understand the concept of really driving your vehicle because they grew up in a world where doing something as fast as possible with minimum effort is what is expected. Quality and self-reliance are foreign concepts.

Just because something requires interaction doesn't make that thing outdated. It just requires more technical know-how and basic intelligence than sitting and waiting for results to be handed to you. I guess those are things that have fallen out of fashion these days. It's a damned, downright dirty shame.

I hope a mongol cuts the ****ing legs off that high horse you're on.

Increased options means increased build configurations, which means more programming in the factories, more money put out, more supply chains.

Ultimately it would make the car more expensive for everyone.

Really?

I'm 32, paid for my own college, work for an insurance company, paid for all of my own cars, and work in government and provider contracting at said company.

I prefer automatics.

Tell me again how I'm somehow less intelligent?

which is the same reason why manuals will be phased out.

No real higher thinking involved at the OEM other than that.

And I'm fine with that, manual transmissions should die like manual steering boxes. Though i think some of the "standard options" are included simply to inflate the bottom line because they can embed profit in the cost of these "options" much easier on bits of tech here and there ...while the cost of coding the robots to just not install that item is a much lower factor vs how it does nothing but decrease profit margins for the vehicle by eliminating fluff features.

Whatever happens in the future will be in the future, and to start adapting mentally to that attitude now would be to start surrendering to mindless conformity. It's not "stubbornly pretending it's not going to happen" to dislike your above-quoted vision of the future or speak in opposition to it.

FWIW, when you have either strong preferences for something or strong dislikes for the alternatives, the arguments aren't weak when you can identify specifics. I know in some detail why I'd never regard driving an AT car with anything above the barest amount of grudging acceptance. I know I'd resent paying for the "privilege" of being stuck having to drive a car so equipped - simply because others didn't value the concept of choice enough to maintain it here.

nonconformingly,

Norm

No doubt, especially when the "real" push in Silicon Valley is really to eliminate driving altogether. We will see then how onboard cellsafemode is about unwanted evolution.

I can see it now, man I wish I was driving and unwinding instead of all the "extra" paperwork work pushes me to do to and from work since I am not allowed to drive. I though it would be all netflix and xbox during my commute, now its carsickness, and more unpaid work..... awesome!

Yes, but that would inflate the base price of the car. That was kind of my point (even if it wasn't very obvious )

Went for the A8, was first going for the manual but...
Manual sure is fun and gives you more of a feeling being connected to the car, but it also takes away some of the focus of the actual driving.

Then again, both me and Mrs Mduck should be able to drive it properly bringing the kids along for the ride. So I think I made the right decision hehe .)
