2014-15 Camaro LS
Hey guys, I've been debating on what I want to do for days now, and I'm having trouble coming to a decision. I know it's not a Camaro6 but I figured the community could help me out.
Ok, so I'm 19. And instead of getting a 6th gen camaro, I've decided that I'm just going to get a 2014-15 Camaro 2LS or 1LS. I'm wanting a 2LS because I plan to keep the car for a few years and I want to enjoy the creature comforts while it lasts. I have a job and my average pay a week so far is around 400 to 450 a week. Sometimes 600 if it's a good week. Which is about every 2 weeks or so. Now, there's multiple things I want to talk about. 1. Insurance. Because of me being a young age, and it being a sports car, I know it will be high. BUTTT. I am going to get my grandpa to put me on his insurance. And he's 67 with a clean driving record and owns a 2011 Camaro V6. He also owns a 2007 GMC Sierra. So what I'm thinking about doing is taking a loan out from the bank for about 10k or 13k and give my grandpa all of it for him to pay it completely off, and just pay the bank off over time. The banks loan interest rate is pretty low I believe. Is that ok? Would that work...? 2. Car payments. I would probably be paying around 250 a month or so to the bank. But I'm not sure how all that works and could use and little advice on all this. To sum it all up. I am really wanting a Camaro, and the 2015 LS is great for me for a few years. And I am wanting to take this approach so insurance won't kill me. I want something suitable, and this is something I see myself having for awhile. Am I making the right decison? Can this work? Any additional information would be great. ---- Just know I also put 200 in my savings account every week. Sometimes 400 if my check is right. I'm not a heavy spender at all, and I only want what I enjoy. Which is my Camaro lol. I save alot. Especially with the goals I have set. (Million Dollar Mindset) Thank you guys. I will check the replies as soon as I wake up. Good night guys |

I had a 14 LS and it was fine-you won't be spending a lot on gas, fine a nice one with options you like.People on here will slam you for not getting an SS but you will be not be buying rear tires and speeding tickets at your age.My2 cents.

Insurance wise your grandfathers insurance will go up because he will have a young driver added to his insurance. By how much will it go up that depends on a lot of different factors. Hopefully shouldn't be a huge jump.
Why don't you just buy your grandfathers 2LT if he's willing to sell it? You'll get it much cheaper and that car is already on the insurance. |

I had a 2010 Camaro 2LT. Fun car. Nothing wrong with not getting an SS if you can't afford it.

It sounds like you would benefit from doing some homework. All of your plans are based on your best guess rather than real numbers.
1) Call some insurance companies and check rates. Have your Grandpa do the same with his insurance company. Then compare rates and options and make your decision. 2) You talk about taking out a loan and letting your Grandpa pay off the car. An unsecured personal loan will typically be a higher interest rate than a car loan. Call some lending institutions and compare rates. You can have your Grandpa co-sign the loan and add his name on the car title as a co-owner if you decide to put the car on his insurance. The car loan could be less expensive and putting the loan in your name starts building a credit history for you. 3) There are a number of car loan payment calculators on the internet. Run a few calculations with real numbers from Step 2 above and see how this fits your budget. Good luck with your decision and I hope it all works out for you! There should be a nice selection of used 5th gens out there for you to select from. I had a 2013 2LT/RS convertible and it was a great car. |

It's good that your are giving this purchase some serious thought before you pull the trigger.
1) Insurance- Only way you will know the added cost to your grandpa is to have him call his agent and get a quote. Then you will have an actual number to work with. 2) Car payment/loan. Don't understand why you talk about your grandpa being involved in this transaction. Would suggest you should go on your own for this car loan. If you don't qualify on your own I would suggest you keep saving like you mention you are doing till you can qualify yourself for the car loan.

I cringe when I see these kinds of questions from really young people.
I know you want a Camaro. EVERYONE wants a Camaro when they're 19. I get it. The car is stupid cool and you'd be the mac daddy with the ladies. There's good reasons insurance is insanely high for someone your age, and one of them is unless someone is helping you or you fell into money somehow, you shouldn't be able to afford it. You SHOULD have a runabout average ho-hum sedan that will get you from point A to point B and back while you work to save your money. Then when you've got some cash in the bank, and you're a little older and your insurance goes down, you can afford the Camaro without your Grandfather helping you. Now, that's between you and him, he sounds like a great guy to be willing to help you on insurance. Remember, he loves you very much to be doing this and you really need to stay out of trouble or else HIS rates will skyrocket. I know I sound like an old man but I'm only 39. When I was 19 my car was a 1985 Buick Regal with the old 231 V6 and nasty 1980s emission controls that sucked any ounce of performance the engine could muster to begin with. Never had a chance of getting a speeding ticket. But I saved my pennies and I saved my dimes (giddy up giddy up 409 ), and of course got a good job after school, and if you do that you'll enjoy your car even more!

Not to get all in your business but don't put yourself in a situation for a car where you can't move out of the house. Your independence is much more important than a fancy car.
If you can't do it on your own (get the loan, pay the insurance, not live in the parents basement) its too expensive for you. If you don't have the credit, now is the time to work on that. It sounds like you are on the right track at this point... just keep heading that way. |
