Drone racing and the RC hobby

So a few weeks ago was talking about drone racing because they were showing it on ESPN. Then I was Christmas shopping at Barnes and Noble and saw these "Parrot" drones for sale--in a bookstore of all places.

These things had price tags of $600-800 and higher and I was like well forget that. Then I was in Walmart and I saw some cheaper ones that I assume are basically for kids. The more expensive ones said "FPV" on the box and give you a drone's eye view on your cellphone.

Then I started really looking into it and the hobby types apparently have no use for the cheaper drones because they use WiFi to broadcast the image to your phone. The pro guys are basically using old-fashioned RF signals to get the FPV image to their goggles. That all looked really expensive.

A little more youtubing later and I found out that actually it's a pretty cheap hobby to get into(compared to performance cars anyway).

Anybody else here into this?

I have always thought it was a cool hobby, I just don't have extra money for it. So I live vicariously though youtube RC/Drone videos.

Years ago, I used to go out to George Bush Park out on the westside of Houston and watch them fly the model airplanes... they have a really cool setup.

I would pickup a sandwich some chips and a drink, and sit in my truck and watch them do some pretty cool aerobatics.

I've been flying drones for a while. Mostly for video though, not racing. Racing can get expensive.

This was the Camaro5Fest in Bay Town, TX

I'd like to see them make a IMAX or 3D movie using drone cameras. With a drone you can shoot in HD and get angles that are impossible with normal camera booms or lifesize helicopters.

Great footage and beautiful scenery. I am more into aerial photography and also videography. Will share related info soon. The drone's industry is evolving right now, not just racing, my friend of mine custom his drone so it can help in his farm (like watering down plant)
