E85 / Spark Plugs

I've fielded some questions recently about the need to move to a colder spark plug with E85. I actually installed the NGK LTR7IX-11 (6510) plugs this weekend on my personal car.

Take aways...

1. It is NOT necessary to change out the factory plugs for E85/bolt-ons. The factory plugs looked absolutely excellent on E85 and my tune. I had the plugs out and the new ones purchased so I installed them. There were zero impacts to the tune.

2. Cylinder #8 is a real pain and will likely lead to blood loss. LOL The rest are pretty straight forward.

Good to know, I see that some of the tuners have rolled those into the costs of tuning.

Spark plug removal was a question I had a couple months ago. Thanks for being the Guinea pig.

If plugs are coming out showing issues it will be in the tuning at this level.

I changed the plugs myself on my G8 GT w/ LS V8......97k miles

The back pass side one was fun... the Aussies conveniently put a stud coming out of the firewall to make rachet impossible and threads to catch skin on......

Bad words were uttered as to why Oz even exists for a few minutes...

It will probably depend on the size of your hands and assortment of available tools. #8 is the difficult one but I don't have to move anything when I do mine. Start with the passenger side first and get that out of the way. Plan on some scratched skin.

We did the plug change as part of the E85 flex conversion, but it was mainly for KR control.

Tim, can you comment on potential issues with the oem o2 sensors causing problems on e85 converted cars? I was at the track yesterday and this was a conversation. I didn't get the entire jist of what is actually happening do to the fact we're rivals, only that both cars are starting to have issues and one of them is on it's second replacement set so I'm told...

Something to bear in mind, the L83 GenV 5.3l in the truck is FlexFuel from the factory. It uses the same 02 sensors as the L86 & LT1.

There shouldn't be any issues with E85 and the O2 sensors on this platform. I've been running E85 straight since September and not a single issue. The sensors looked normal when I did the header swap a couple of weekends ago and on the scanner they are oscillating as expected.

I haven't seen any posts or reports of E85 hurting the O2s on the Camaro or C7 forums. Ethanol burns much cleaner than gasoline so unless their tune is dumping fuel down the exhaust I can't see why it would cause any issues.
