What fun is it to be miserable for god only knows how many days by renting a Camaro. There are 3 adults, bite the bullet and rent a full size car and enjoy the beautiful places to visit

Jeff fox: driving on the opposite side is the least of my concern, I've driven quite a lot on the continent so usual driving mechanics should be alright I do have a question though, are you really allowed to turn right even when the light is red, given there's no incoming traffic?

Yes, we do have right turn on red unless there is a sign saying no right turn on red.

Yea, just come to a full stop at the red, if there is no oncoming traffic or pedestrians crossing the street, you are good to go.

Had that, too. Was a little confused when we made our first miles in California. But you get used to it soon Had problems when I came back to Germany after 3 weeks.... Good for me that my wife was "on board" Also you can overtake on every lane on a freeway. Donīt know if itīs allowed but everybody did this so did we. Completely prohibited in Germany !

hold on so you can undertake on the inside lane, ie from the right?
And also what's the regulation on overtaking school buses? Are you never allowed to overtake them or only when they have that big stop sign extended?? (sorry my US schoolbus knowledge ends at the one from Sesame street....)

I'm from the UK but have lived and driven all across the USA over the past 30+ years.

"Undertaking" someone on the right in the US is allowed BUT treat the person you are passing in that fashion as COMPLETELY unaware that you are doing so - so please use extreme caution. I always try to pass on the left - sometimes a flash or two of the headlamps will wake someone up, but try to avoid the commonly used method of tailgating - it is prevalent in the MidWest. Also be aware that many people (like me) are carrying a weapon. Mine is always in the glovebox but it does have a round in the chamber. With the responsibility of 'carrying' I always avoid the potential for road rage - so if someone does not get out of the way, I play it cool and hold back.

I recently drove from Dover, DE to Bella Vista, AR - 1270 miles - in one go. 18 hours with stops for fuel, food and nature breaks. I ran into a couple of opportunities for silliness - but I also ran with an Acura for about 300 miles - the guy was an absolute pro...I was sorry to see him pull off the freeway.

Youīre right, but Iīm a very defensive driver while not in Germany and I have a lot of respect for other drivers. I ALWAYS drive on the right side but to overtake slower vehicles. Hope that I did it right
I donīt want to be pulled over by cops so i keep it calm Saw a lot of slow cars on the left or the middle lane that were overtaken by others where there was a little room to do so and so did we. Have you ever been to Paris on a Saturday night in the middle of the City ? Hell thatīs fun. get used to that real fast or better use the metro

PS: Is Bella Vista near Sierra Vista / AZ ? My Aunt lived there. She passed away 15 years ago so Iīve never been ther scince then

I've driven in France (complete nut jobs). Bella Vista is in (AR) Arkansas and AZ is Arizona. I'm used to people being confused - some people think AR is Alaska

We have a lot of retired people living around here and the local road authorities are in the process of installing a roundabout (they call them traffic circles her) at a very large and new intersection. I am expecting complete disaster!

Justiny,

Information about right turn on red is correct.

Posted on all US highways "Slower traffic keep right" but often not followed. My understanding is that passing on the right is prohibited but not generally enforced.

I much prefer passing on the left but we do have slow drivers who camp in the left lane for long periods of time. Be very careful if you pass them on the right as they may behave oddly/ignorantly/totally unaware or aggressively when you pass them.

I was able to travel to Germany and drive on the autobahn this past summer. Very well organized and great traffic flow. I did need my host to remind me to return to the right lane after passing several times. Bottom line: US drivers much more erratic and unpredictable.
