1SS stereo upgrade advice
I have a 17 1le the car is perfect but the stereo could be better, I went to two different places to get advice . One wants to do hertz everything , tweeters, side and rear speakers, amplifier and 5 channel amp plus sub quoting 4100$ I coughed because the stereo is not that bad
Second shop, wanted to put polk audio speakers and rockford fozgate preamp and jl audio and quoted 3100$$$ not exactly what I want to spend they offered to just upgrade the speakers all Polk and that would be 600 bucks they said not to put great speakers in unless I'm gonna do the whole thing what do you recommend? its either fully do the system or exhaust and right now I'm leaning towards exhaust...... |

I went with Hertz HDP5, Hertz Mille Legend Ultimate Reference, Bit ONE, DynoMat'd the trunk/doors, and customer box with 2 x 8" Audiomobile. Stereo is amazing, but does cost some. The Bit ONE is blue tooth connected, using the Digital Optical input, and blows away the standard MyLink connection. (I can run either). The only disadvantage to Digital Optical is you can't use the head unit to select songs. You either create a playlist, have your navigator pick them on the fly, or drive distracted.

ok the cheaper way to go is ignore the rear speakers they are for rear fill anyways. Get a decent enough set of drivers for the door and tweeters, amp then a sub. Polk has some decent/ok stuff Hertz is real good. Amp is the part that gets you. a Good set of components up front can be around 500 amp is up to 1k, a decent sub with box few more hundred. You can easily stay under 2k.
Also side note check to see if on parts they do a price match if so price our the equipment they quote u on dealercaraudio(dot)com. Also absolutely do not change speakers to higher end stuff and use the stock amp you will fry them shortly. Underpowering speakers is a short life. Would help to know what you want to spend as a budget, might get some more advice on equipment etc.

I'm not as familiar with polk models and hertz are about the same price as JL which I'm more familiar with so.
dealercostcaraudio Fronts JL Audio C2-650 = 149.99 Fix 82 = 299.99 (need to work with factory HU/Amp) not on dealercost CP208LG-W3v3 = about 459.99 - 499.99 (dual 8s in sub box) JL Audio XD1000/5v2 = 799.99 on dealercost or this amp ive read is pretty good as well Alpine PDX-V9 = 699.99 on dealercost figure another 200 for connections wire etc plus install cost. If you cant find JL you can use the specs off those speakers to get an idea of equivalent in polk I would guess.

I would just start with the Polk speakers first.

I wouldn't spend that much on stereo upgrades
I use to be a big car stereo guy. I get the appeal to buy the greatest brand names and the best sounding systems. The fact is the Camaro was not designed to have quiet interior. To change that, would require pounds and pounds of sound-deading which makes no sense in a sports car.
The ambient noise will destroy even the best systems (in my opinion). I would be hard pressed to tell the difference between a mid grade set up under these conditions. I would myself replace the speakers, spending most on the front components, and get a cheaper set of sensitive speakers for the rear, add a factory upgrade processor, a small-med size 4-channel amp, and a powered sub. The cabin is the Camaro is pretty small, so anything over 100W per channel is pointless unless you want hearing loss later on. You can buy these parts for about $1k to 1.5k. |

I am still planning to take some measurements of cabin noise to see what the impact of the ANC system is (I have a 2ss). You get into a serious cost vs. benefit problem, because what I think most upgraders want is the stereo to overwhelm the cabin noise, at least when they crank the stereo. So I'm still watching the different solutions evolve. I don't think it's worth going ultra-high end with everything given the constraints of the environment. |
