Tailpipe soot

At 2400 miles, mine was totally black. Cleaned it up as best I could, but I couldn't get it all off the chrome tip. Anyway, is this a common issue on the V6 and is it something to be concerned about?

The SS has the same issue I polish mine all the freaking time.. Mothers power cone and borla exhaust polish. I can get them sparkling clean and shiny but they don't last.

For this reason on mine I painted the inside of the tips black with high temp paint. Now the black soot doesn't matter - can't see it.

that and most cars run a bit rich from the factory.

aside from just NOT driving the car, you gotta expect a byproduct of combustion engines. the more power something produces, the more "soot" will be kicked out.

same thing with brake pads... you want better stopping power, you need something with a higher friction coefficient. the more friction, the more wear...more dust.

goes hand in hand really.

another option is to buy electric or hybrid

Clean them regularly and it's a non issue. I have over 6,000 miles on my SS and it's not bad at all.

Thanks everyone for the replies, good to know I'm not alone on this issue. Will try to keep them clean for now.

Some will say that fuel doesn't make a difference in an engine that only needs 87 octane. That being said, sooting was a BIG problem on my wife's 2014 Impala LTZ w/3.6 LFX. We used 87 octane because that was recommended and the consensus was higher octane fuel was a waste of money. I asked one of the techs at the dealership where I work if the sooting was characteristic of the LFX DI engine or was there an underlying problem and he suggested I try 93 octane fuel because of the different additive package and insisted it would help. I can say from personal experience that it does, sooting was minimal after the switch. Use a top-tier brand that is available to you, I can get Shell V-power and Chevron w/Techron where I live. Clean your tips, switch fuel and your problem will improve.

In Missouri where I live 91 is the top we can get. I wish we could get 93, good tip though.

Well I guess so but I never use anything but top tier 93 and I get plenty of soot. Its just a fact of life and I roll with it.
