Break-In Question
Sorry if this is in the wrong spot.
My 1LE should be arriving in the next couple weeks (I hope). I want to do the break-in correctly and not screw it up. I was reading the owners manual and it says "Avoid driving at any one constant speed, fast or slow." The dumb question of the month is: How many miles constitutes "constant speed"? Should I change RPM every mile, every 10 miles? I will try to avoid the interstates as much as possible but sometimes I cannot. Thank you for any help. -Tim |

I would imagine you could always drop a gear for a minute or two, then shift back, the rpms would fluctuate but you could mantain say 65 mph or so the whole time if on the highway.

on the highway I just don't set the cruise and play a little more ... no magic number out there I don't think, but just the concept that you don't want to set the cruise on the highway for a prolonged period. By making some effort at all, you're probably ahead of the curve. And you do have to wonder how much of a difference following ALL of the rules versus following NONE of the rules really makes. 10,000 miles more longevity? 50,000? 1-2 more mpg over the lifespan? 2-3 more HP? who knows. Have fun with the breakin but don't let it ruin your enjoyment
I used to be a little more strict but now I just tone my driving down a but and make sure i do fluid intervals appropriately (documented).Have fun! When the manual is very specific, follow it more closely. If it's vague, interpret it as you like. That's MY interpretation. |

Don't overthink it either. This is a modern car, most things don't require as much, or any real break in. Just vary your rpms at first on long trips, don't smash on the brakes the first time you drive it, don't pull out of the dealer doing a John Force burnout, and you will be fine. Heck, many on here think fully following the break in isn't the best idea either as far as seating the rings, and overly babying it. My friend took his SS to the drag strip with 70 miles on it, 20,000 miles later it's running great and has never used a drop of oil or had a problem. So take it for what you will.

Why is the camaro 1500 miles break in and the c7 500 before you can drive hard and 1500 to track

He also told me that many can sometimes take what the manual says, and skew it. Like he told me it says no full throttle starts, but says nothing about going full throttle while at speed. Things of that nature... Funny thing is even the LT1 crate engines say just 500 miles...just like the C7's |
