First, I didn't knew the state law details so assumed it's all legal by looking at the product description Borla has for 11924 and 11925. A friend warned me when I mentioned Borla mod to him (he is more into exhaust mods and remembered the fuss about this MA law which is somewhat recently enacted).

Second, I get likelihood of getting a ticket thing...most cops won't care unless you really piss them off as a driver for something. Other issue could be with state stickers, inspector can easily fail it by just seeing Borla while doing emissions test and that will be a big PITA because your only recourse at that point will be put the stock back on. Again, most likely majority of inspectors won't care either but good to be aware of all pitfalls.

Hopefully other forum members will be more aware of their state laws after this thread.

Borla folks haven't responded to me on this so far.

I'm thinking the 50 state legal thing is for emissions...

I've never had an issue with an aftermarket exhaust on any car I've modded (for inspections or tickets). If you are driving normal (at least with my Borla set up) it's actually not even that loud so I don't think a LEO would look come after me since it's not visible as with tinted windows or a missing front plate.

On the other hand, if I was revving my engine or ripping it really hard down the street it would be a different story, but at that point I'm gonna get nailed for speeding or reckless driving anyways...

IMO an exhaust is relatively low risk in most states, especially if it's just an axleback or catback and you are driving it "normal"

Is it street legal to have any of these after market exhausts that are louder than the stock?

Sounds illegal per my state law,
https://malegislature.gov/Laws/Gener...er90/Section16

(2) with an exhaust system which has been modified in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the exhaust.

I have no experience in this matter so asking here.
Thanks!

Sorry I haven't chimed in until now, I was out for the holidays.

Sound laws are much less precise/strict compared to emissions laws. They can vary drastically based on where you live, but also keep in mind these can be local laws too, not just state laws. Because of that, it's hard to say where exhausts will or will not be legal based on sound. The literal wording of the law that you quoted makes it sound like you cannot make any changes to the exhaust on your car. However, it's rare that anyone comes forward with legal issues because it really is about how these laws are enforced, as other members on here have said. My advice would be to do some more research about the laws in the specific city and county that you live in, and ask people in your area if they've had any experiences with this also.

Don't bring attention to yourself and you won't have to worry about ANY mods you do. Act like an idiot...you deserve what you get.
