Performance Data Recorder SD Card

Can someone tell me where the SD card slot is located in the 6th Gen ZL1 and whether it will accept SDXC cards? I looked briefly the other day but didn't see it. Now the car is all wrapped up in the car cover in preparation for bad weather.

The Chevy PDR web page doesn't say. Nor does it specify whether I can use an SDXC card (faster with 64 GB and higher capacities).

I found an older (2015) Sting Ray and Z06 PDR Quick Reference Guide but it cites formatting the old "FAT32" filesystem that's limited to 32 GB. Everything being built now takes the SDXC cards using EXFAT filesystem, including cameras, camcorders, tablets, phones, etc. I want to be sure before I buy.

If no one knows, I'll just use one that I've got in my Nikon D600 to test. Then I'll report back with my findings.

The book says exactly what kind of SD card you can use. If you use anything other than what it says it will not work.

Its a slot to the left and below of the steering wheel.

I believe it's in the area above the hood latch release button.

I used this one and it worked out of the box no formatting. You have to insert it in the slot with the sticker facing down

I'm just lazy right now - don't feel like unwrapping my car to get the manual out of the glove box, then wrap it back up. Thanks for the location, though.

I'll look there. Thanks.

Thanks. I use Sandisk Extreme Pro cards in my Nikon but they're SDXC instead of SDHC. The Sandisk Extreme Pro series are the fastest, most reliable cards out there.

I have several memory cards of all different storage capacities. So far only the 32 worked. if i insert any other size the dash just indicates "no memory card inserted" So i just bought a bunch of 32 mb cards. I thinks it said it would give me over 700 minutes of recording time per card.

I do remember them saying it has to be a class 10 or was recommended to be class 10 like you have pictured. I would think any would work, but there's only one way to find out, and I don't have a car to try it with yet.

Here's a photo of the SD slot location.

The slot will read a Class 10, FAT32 formatted SD card in sizes of 8, 16 or 32 gigabytes.

here is how you get around the 32g / FAT32 limit. If you have a android phone then get a 64g micro SD card, put it into the phone and format the card with the phone. It will format the card in FAT32. Then take the micro SD card out and put it into the adapter and then into the car.

It will be FAT32 formatted. This is how we got around that limitation several years ago for some cameras and tablets.

This may help, from the Corvette information:
The PDR system includes three major components, all seamlessly integrated into the Corvette Stingray's interior.
First is the 720p, high-definition camera, mounted within the windshield header trim, which records the driver's point-of-view through the windshield. Audio is recorded via a dedicated microphone in the cabin.
Second is a self-contained data acquisition recorder. The system uses a dedicated GPS receiver that operates at 5Hz, five times faster than the in-dash navigation system, for more precise positioning and corner traces. The recorder is also hard-wired into the Stingray's Controller Area Network (CAN) to access vehicle information, ranging from engine speed and transmission-gear selection to braking force and steering-wheel angle.
Finally, the system features a dedicated SD-card slot in the glove box for recording and transferring video and vehicle data. Recording time depends on the capacity of the memory card, but an 8GB card can record approximately 200 minutes, while a 32GB card stores up to about 800 minutes - more than 13 hours of driving time.
The PDR system can record video with four data overlay options, each rendered in real time:
Track Mode - shows the maximum level of data on the screen, including speed, rpm, g-force, a location-based map, lap time, and more.
Sport Mode - shows fewer details on the overlay, but includes key data including speed and g-force
Touring Mode - no data overlay; it simply records and displays video and audio of the drive
Performance Mode - records performance metrics, such as 0 to 60 mph acceleration, 1/4-mile speed and elapsed time, and 0-100-0 mph runs.

Okay, I'll probably do the same thing if it truly doesn't support the SDXC native format (exfat). Thanks.

The (speed) class 10 just means it will write at least 10 MB/s. The UHS speed class 3 means it will write at least 30 MB/s on UHS II rated devices.

See this reference on the SD Association web site: Speed Class

The capacity rating is specified by standards for SD, SDHC, and SDXC; and dictated by their associated native file systems.

SD standard - Up to 2GB SD memory card using FAT 12 and 16 file systems
SDHC standard - over 2GB-32GB SDHC memory card using FAT32 file system
SDXC standard - over 32GB-2TB SDXC memory card using exFAT file system

See this reference on the SD Association web site: Capacity (SD/SDHC/SDXC)

I'll try others later, based on latest replies in this thread, but I suspect that the consensus is correct; that it will only support 32 MB FAT32 cards.

Thanks for that photo. It leaves no doubt where the slot is located.

What is your reference for the limitations on class, file system type, and size?

That is a workaround if you have extra SDXC cards lying around (regardless of form factor) and you don't want to buy new SDHC cards. However, its kind of a waste to buy a 64 GB SDXC card only to reformat it to FAT32. FAT32 is limited to 32 GB.

Very interesting information. While it's obviously written for the Corvette (slot in the glovebox), it does offer a lot of information that is likely to apply to the 6th Gen ZL1. They apparently haven't upgraded the PDR hardware/firmware yet to leverage new standards.

Even if it is limited to 32 GB, 800 minutes (over 13 hrs) of driving time with telemetry data should be plenty, even for endurance races. If there is a firmware upgrade, though, this may change.

I haven't seen the new Video Speed Class (Vxx) specs yet. Interesting...

Thanks for attaching the Corvette PDR Quick Ref Guide too.

Like the snapshot above, it leaves no doubt where the slot is located. It may be listed somewhere in the owner's manual but who wants to read every page of that thing when they've got a new car that just wants to be let loose on the open road, right?

I do apologize for not reading through all of this in detail....but is the core of the issue that the PDR system does not recognize exFAT formatting?
