I looked at some Danner boots, and a Bench made pocket knife.

Car was to be my daily driver with mostly city/suburb driving, with some autocross and occasional OTD.
Need to be able to haul around 2 kids (ruled out the C5 Z06 I was eyeing). I'm VERY loyal to GM. Gave serious thought to Sonic RS.... (Figured I could build one for racing and buy another one for daily when it got too radical... and together they would still be cheaper than my 1SS). Drove one for a week. Loved it... all except the lack of power and horrible exhaust note (even with the performance exhaust)... but the general handling and ride characteristics were brilliant for such a turd of a car. I considered a 1 or 2 year old Buick Regal GS AWD (Would need a tune and a little "tweaking" but man those things drive nice and handle amazing all things considered). But remembered my last "modified" turbo car, and decided I'm a full warranty guy now... let the dealers fix it and don't mess with all those engineers' hard work. But after hearing how awesome the 6th gen was going to be before it came out, and knowing it was probably going to be my last chance to own a V8 Monster, I had to own a V8 Camaro. (Get your butt handed to you by an electric car just once, and you'll understand that statement). So I put my order in for my 1SS the day the order banks opened. I was hoping to have my car as early as Aug... or more realistically in Sept/Oct... but instead the quality hold made me wait until Dec. During that time the publicity on the Focus RS came out. I almost canceled my order and went with the blue oval. To be honest, the only reason I didn't was the A8 transmission in the Camaro. I'd driven the C7 Corvette (both M7 and A8 transmissions) and loved the automatic for all the traffic I'd be in plus the ability to track it. If the Focus RS had such a trans, I'd have one now. Then again, I heard all the Ford dealers are putting big markups on those, and I probably would have got mad and stormed out and ordered another camaro. So either way, I'd be right where I'm at, happily driving my fire breathing V8 Camaro... even if it is locked in Stealth mode with Snow tires for 1/2 the year. In the end, no regrets. |

Didn't shop around at all. Got a GM card two years ago to help with the down payment and worked really hard to pay off my house and car early to get the opportunity to special order my Camaro. Never test drove one. In fact, I didn't get behind the wheel of one until I drove mine off the lot. This truly was my dream car.

OP. Please don't do the RC350. I had that car prior to the SS. No comparison. If you want luxury with no soul or driving excitement by all means the RC is for you. Otherwise Camaro. Sound, handling, performance hands down the Camaro wins.

Additionally, the 2SS has pretty much all the features my RC had albeit maybe not quite as nice of materials in places. I can't think of a thing I miss on the RC that I don't have with the Camaro.

I've looked at BMWs again (maintenance costs and reliability - $$$), briefly considered a Mustang (doesn't move me), like the F Jaguar, (more than I want to spend), Audi (again, reliability and maintenance costs). I keep coming back to the Camaro.

I looked at the Jaguar XE
Jaguar F Type (The SC model was a hoot but way too much money) 3 and 4 Series BMWs, including the M versions S5 C7 (I really wanted a C7 but living with one on a daily basis was questionable)

1. another 997 911 in S guise
2. Golf R for dd abilities and tuning 3. Mustang GT w/ PP and Recaros 4. Challenger 392 The 997 911 was perfect for driving, but I couldn't DD one and feel great about it if the car got destroyed. Plus it lacked many modern conveniences. The MK7 Golf R is a great package, but I couldn't get over the looks of it. I still think the MK7 GTI looks better and those used to come in 2 doors. The 4 door MK7 Golfs just don't look good to me. I've test driven a ton of the new Mustang GT's with PP and Recaros and was pretty set on that car. The throttle delay was lazy outside of Sport mode, but I had a Mustang in college and was more of a Ford guy. The Challenger looks great but it's simply too big to drive around the DC metro area with how small some of our parking garages can be. Maybe if I lived/worked in the suburbs. During my Mustang research, I learned about the MT82 and saw what GM was doing with the Alpha chassis. I got a test ride in my friend's C7 that had MRC, Active Rev Matching, all the goodies and really grew to love the tech and abilities that Chevy brought to the table. Once I heard about the 20% off deal on 2016 models, I went to test drive a loaded '16 but it sold before I got to the dealer. I then test drove another '16, one of the only ones left in the area, and it didn't have MRC or NPP which was a deal breaker for me (plus they didn't know the value of a 911 for trade in). Finally, I found a 2017 50th 2SS with every option I wanted and the dealership experience was top-notch. The test drive was great and I knew this would be a good blend of DD comfort with great track performance for the money. Seeing where it places among the other cars on my list makes me very happy and proud of what GM did with this car. For the money, there isn't a better sports car out there.

Mustang GT Premium - couldn't afford GT350 or I would have consider that
Challenger Scat Pack - same thing on Hellcat, too much for me C7 Vette used - never could find what I wanted at the right price Jeep Wrangler - really want one some day and I decided to get big V8 now and this next Jaguar F Type Coupe used - did not fit my archery bows in the boot so that ended that

Before my 1le I was interested in:
-E92 m3 coupe v8 -c6 corvette, c5 zo6 -dodge viper srt10 -ford focus rs -alfa romeo 4c (the new quattrofoglio is so nice, a piece of art) -porsche 996 cs -lexus isF -nissan 370z nismo I can't think of any other ones. But It had to be stick so a few of those and other cars I could have listed were ruled out immediately But I'm a huge fan of lexus. I personally think lexus is a top 3 best brand in the world. In terms of price, quality, reliability, technology. I don't know how I feel about the new styling. It's the new japanese styling with all the sharp angles. You see them on all the new nissans, civics, and lexus mostly. Not so much toyota. Too bad they don't have anything stick. I swear if that isF or my favorite, the rcF had sticks, I would get them over most cars But my family went through a few lexus'. Some gs300 and gs350's. Such nice cars. Never broke, excellent service. Same service if not better than Porsche that services my father's car. |
