in southern california's climate. I've never had to do anything more than touch the start button for it to start up nearly immediately. maybe 1-3 seconds.

The Corvette uses the same V8 that we do, essentially ,and in the 2014 owners manual it showed how long it cranks based on how cold it is. At 20° below zero it took something like 25 seconds to light up the engine.

Same here - takes a few seconds to fire especially if really cold. Much slower than the V6 3.6 DI motor in the Colorado - that one fires right up. Go figure.

SS 6 speed

This is good to know. I was wondering if my car had an issue since it also takes a couple seconds to fire up when cold. My DI Lincoln V6 fires right up.

I was thinking the same thing. This is a GM thing for DI motors not a normal way that DI engines operate.

My car cranks forever compared to my wifes MDX and it's DI

Mine takes about 1-3 seconds of cranking to start. Maybe 5 on the coldest morning to date, which many wouldn't have considered to be very cold because I live in a State with a mild climate.

What's more concerning is just how slowly it will sometimes crank on a restart when the engine is hot. There have been a couple of times when I thought the battery might be down or need a boost.

Anyone else experience THAT?

Nope.

And more like you live in the part of the state with mild climate. Gets cold in northern ca in the winter. It's already into the 30s in the mornings. Ok fine - not Green Bay cold but.
