Driving the Camaro in the winter time

Sorry, if this sounds stupid but I just bought my first Camaro and I'm just wondering if I need to do anything special when driving during the winter time - especially since it's my DD. Thanks!

I see that you have the 1LT which comes with all season tires. You should be fine if you take it easy. If you plan on driving it in snow and ice, you can look into getting another set of wheels with winter tires for added safety.

The #1 thing that I can recommend for safety is to simply take it easy.

Use the snow/ice driving mode.

You may want to think about a winter tire and wheel package.

I'm going to remove those plastic wind deflectors that hang down under the front bumper in front of the wheels. They don't give enough ground clearance and I'm afraid they'll tear off or get damaged plowing through the snow.

I also have a 1LT with all seasons but opted to go with a new set of rims and tires to get me through the winter. I also had a clear bra installed to keep salt from sandblasting the car and I also have RPI mudflaps coming in to help keep salt/snow off the paint as much as possible. Another thing to consider would be a rust proofing undercoat.

undercoating isn't really going to do much and may do more harm than good if they plug up drain holes.

Rust is going to happen in a salt + water environment. But what I'd be more concerned about is allowing snow to remain in contact with the car (either on top or below or beside) for extended periods of time. The melt + freeze cycle day to day causes ice to form where it shouldn't and keep water in contact with inside unprotected metal for extended periods of time.

Your best protection is to just make sure once it's done snowing, you wipe it off so there's nothing/not much left to melt and then later freeze again as that meltwater goes into the drain areas of your car. The rest is pretty self explanatory and common sense when it comes to dealing with snow driving.

Also, making sure you're not tracking in full shoe size encrusted amounts of snow and ice + salt to melt on the carpet and sit in the car and change your black carpet to grey. Wet carpets will do lots of rust damage to where things like seats bolt into the floor as well as seatbelts and this will tend to be where you see the start of floor rot over time.

I have low profile all season changed. (Same size as the stock summer tires)
No problem in winter here in Connecticut. So far, no wheel spin in light snow shower.

If you going to DD it in regular snow, you will need regular sized snow tires, which means new rims too.

I had the factory all season tires (were they BF Goodrich?) on my '14 Camaro 2LS and never had an issue. They were, in fact, very good.

It is worth noting that I live in a state where they aggressively plow, salt and sand the roads and that I used my 4wd truck on days with heavy storms.

Asterisk aside, I'd be surprised if the '16/17 non-RS Camaro's aren't at least as good in the snow as the '14. In my experience special snow tires and another set of rims would have been a waste of money.

I'm getting my diff coated with a protective resin/paint... it's the only unpainted piece of iron on the car (2SS) and it's already showing visible signs of rust.

Any recommendation on what kind of tires to get? I was thinking of getting the Pirelli Sottozero snow tires or the Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow both are pricey lol

Just bought some! Started raining here in MD and I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of snow this winter

Continental DWS06 all weather tires have good reviews and are sized in OEM sizes so as to not have to change to another wheel size
