Potential 6 Cyl buyer....A few questions...

Drove a 2SS / 8 spd auto the other day at my local Dealer.I was VERY impressed. Got me going on a new Camaro.

BUT....My real world situation. I live in a rural area, my trip to town is 45 miles one way. That is 95% on 80 MPH Interstate. I usually need to drive in 3-4 times a week.

Everything out here is a DRIVE. I do 25-30K a year, easily. Sometimes more.

I DO have a 4x4 for truly lousy Winter conditions so THAT is not a factor. BUT one can get caught in bad weather , so some snows or at minimum All Seasons on the rear from Nov to March are probably a reality.

So ...MPG, tire life and fuel costs ARE a factor.

Going to drive one tomorrow at the Dealers. An auto, hoping to drive a stick for comparison as well.

Loved the sound, the acceleration of the 2SS for sure....But lets be realistic...98% of it's life will be regular old driving duty. I do not Track or SCCA, also too old and a retired Cop....so no street racing.

I know I'm giving up a LOT between a 2SS and a 2LT with a six. But the six is also GIVING me a lot too.

Looking at a pair of 2LT's, both Performance Exhaust and RS packages. Both Autos. And both are colors I like, NO sunroofs which limit my head room and affordable.

Anything else regarding a six versus a 1SS or 2SS?

I know this is a rambling...stream on consciousness thread...I think I'm looking for some support here. LOL.

I love my 6 A8. It is my DD. The cost savings for me between the SS and RS, then insurance cost makes it worth it.

Some will jump in with "only V8...etc etc.." but there is plenty of go in the V6. I think the only thing i may regret not thinking of getting was a sunroof.

And for me at 6'-2" the sunroof drops the headroom an inch or so...Just enough for my noggin to graze the SR molding. So I'm trying to find cars WITHOUT the SR.

What are you getting for MPG?

Thanks for the reply.

highway you should see easily 30-33 every day at those speeds, assuming they're flat-ish miles.

As far as power goes, it's about on par with stock Z28 4th gens. So i'm not missing anything at all coming from a v8 to this.

the thing you have to consider when talking a V6 vs an I4, is the aftermarket. Modding for performance may force you to look elsewhere when it comes to the V6.

its a lot of car for the money, thats for sure. 335 hp for mid to low 20k (depending on trim level) is definitely worth it. you can still commute in style with plenty of power at your feet. the exhaust is pretty good with a decent growl and has a hint of a v8 at low rpm.

but lets be real, the gas mileage difference between the 8 and 6 are not that far apart. im averaging 15-16 mph on the streets and 21 hwy as a DD. the v8 is clearly the preformance choice, it just has way more to offer regarding mods and aftermarket purposes. ive sat behind one AFTER i got the 6 and i sometimes wish i had went the big boy route. if i could afford it, i would certainly go 8.

On straight, flat Florida roads I average 33-40 mpg going 50-60mph, and 30-32 mpg at 75 mph. The A8 and V6 is a great combo (let's face it, the car in any configuration is great) and love it as a DD. 87 fuel is nice too, don't need 91/93. Also insurance is less expensive on the V6 compared to the V8 (apparently).

The V6 is a perfect DD if your looking for a fun sports car. You can put regular gas in it, so you'll save there. It's plenty quick enough for daily driving and will dust the average car out there. Definitely find one with the Dual Mode Exhaust; it's probably my favorite thing about the car and sounds incredible when you hammer it (which you can do in a V6 on the street without looking like a menace to society). You'll save quite a bit on insurance, I'm sure. The manual is a ton of fun.

Finding a reasonably prices SS is a problem out here anyway. All the Dealers order max option cars. Every SS I have seen is a $47K to $55K car. More than I can rationalize.

I have missed the -20% deal on 2016's. I've been hunting the internet, close by there are few left. And all of those are max option cars. I can't do $40K.

Dave Smith in Idaho had a nicely optioned 2SS but it was sold this morning. That one was $36K.

The 2 LT, 6 Cyl models I have found that will be shortly available are colors I like, have the perf exhaust and have $36-$38K retail prices. So final pricing should be low thirties, I hope.

Im happy with my 1LT 6 cyl manual. There's plenty enough power for me and for the price i couldn't pass it up.

Are you getting 21 mpg on the highway, or 21 mpg combined? If combined, I can see that happening if you live in a big city. If highway only, something doesn't seem right there. I'm in line with the others, getting 33 mpg at around 75ish without really trying.

V6 is definitely a great DD. I love mine. Have no regrets not getting the SS. None whatsoever. Nope, not me.

Let's just say, my next car will be a Camaro, and it will be a V8. However, the V6 is a great car. And logically, it makes more sense for a DD.

I guess in Montana, everything would be a drive. But I've heard some parts of the highway don't have a speed limit (or is very high) because it's so desolate.

Anyway, I have a 2LT 6-speed manual and over 5 tanks in 2 months (1,720 miles on it so far) I average 21MPG. I would assume the A8 would get better MPG cruising in no traffic. My daily commute is about 1.5 miles to work which kills my mpg. But it's 12 miles into town (to enter civilization), 15 miles to Walmart, and 20 miles to the nearest mall. There are no highways near here, but the 12 miles has 1 stop sign near town, and after that it's a Highway with traffic lights through town. I'm a bit heavy on the takeoff since it's so much fun in this car. I do get up to 70-75 easily and notice that in the M6 at 75MPH in 6th gear I am at 2,600-2,800 RPM. In my wife's 2013 2LS 6-speed auto it sits around 2,000 RPM (but the 2LS was geared for better fuel economy). I'd assume a Gen6 A8 would sit about 2,200 RPM at 75MPH.

I had a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid for 7 years which I averaged 44 MPG. I then got a 2013 2LT/RS Automatic (A6) and I averaged 20MPG. I keep track of my mileage in a program called FillPro.

While a V8 would be nice and I'd like to have once in a blue moon to take to the track, as you've stated it really isn't practical for you, me, or many people... and the V6 with 335HP will be plenty of power. I can go from 70 to 90 to pass someone quickly on these one lane roads around here. I chose the V6 also like others have stated for the insurance savings and the fact I can put in regular (87) gas and not Premium (91/93). $2.11/gal vs $2.80/gal right now here in my part of Florida. $0.70 cents x 16 gallons = $11.20 extra per fill-up, x 5 fill-ups/month = $56. Tack a few extra bucks a month for insurance (it was $22/mo more than the V6 for me at 42 with clean record and low mileage). These are all costs to think about that will only increase over time.

Good luck to you... and enjoy whatever you get!
