I just checked on mine too. The OnStar Smart Driver was activated. I logged into mychevrolet.com, clicked on "OnStar" on the left hand menu, scrolled to the bottom and clicked the Deactivate button. I didn't have to log into the Onstar site (which is good, since I never created an account there).

Onstar cannot send this info to your insurance company. No one is secretly watching your driving score. If you insurance company offers discounts for good driving scores from OnStar then you can optionally enroll into this. But just because its enabled and free for 12 months does not mean you're automatically opted into the program. Stop freaking out.

I just checked my Onstar account and I hadn't been opted in automatically. Phew!
Although I'm sure Onstar wouldn't deliberately reveal anyone's driving habits to their insurance company, I bet the Russians could hack into the database just to try to interfere with our democratic freedoms to drive fast cars. A freedom that the Russian citizens can only envy, with their Skodas and Zustavas. |

The US Government is a whole different story. They can see the nudes my GF texts me. They can track my GPS on my phone and my car. They can probably listen to the conversation in my car via onstar mic if they wanted to. But I don't really care, I have nothing to hide. Not to mention, I'm not someone they are interested in. |

Although I am a careful driver, I just un-enrolled in OnStar SmartDriver. While the info is not being disseminated to anyone, it can be subpoenaed by a smart attorney who knows the info exists and wants it to help prove his case against you (and your insurance comp.).

Thanks for the heads up. I've been aware of this on a voluntary arrangement with individual insurance companies, but not as a feature available on your car from any mfr. Something new to watch out for, no matter whose connectivity/telematics system is in play.
Doesn't matter what I drive now, or what I will in the future, but with the way it is set up to 'grade' your driving it has no way of determining if hard braking in particular was because you were close to being involved in an accident (what they'll always assume was the case) or if it was something a lot more innocent (such as avoiding a red light camera ticket, something you do to keep your hard braking skills up-to-date so you'll be less likely to panic if/when you need to do this "for real", or just to dislodge a piece of grit that's making your brakes squeak). The usual hard/extreme braking threshhold is only something like half a g, which really isn't all that hard at all. Norm
