That was true as well for the GT350R-C in both 15 and 16.
I have not been able to find any hard facts, just rumors, but it is my understanding that obtaining satisfactory BOP results in PWC and IMSA CTSC has been the main reason that the fields have been getting so small and why they are all switching to SRO GT4 Regulations beginning in 2017. I would love to know what BOP or other changes caused the Z/28 to disappear from IMSA in 2016, and what magic does SRO bring to the table to make BOP work better for GT4 racing. Let's hope that we all get to see some great competition between lots of our favorite pony cars in 2017. |

Racing series have been switching over to GT3 and GT4 spec race cars as it opens up the series for a lot of existing race cars (especially GT3 cars). There is probably something like 30-40 GT3 race cars for you to shop for your racing team (Stevenson Motorsports was looking at the Cadillac ATS VR and the Audi R8 LMS). You can buy a GT3 spec race car and race anywhere in the world as there are a lot of series that allow them. |

This should help. page 5 Z/28.R page 7 350R. Z/28.R was the most restricted to keep from winning. It was no way they were going to keep letting a Camaro win so you know how the rest goes.

Note that that document was for the 2015 IMSA season. It included two Riley built Camaros. The second one being the Z/28.R. The Z/28 had a 60.0mm restrictor. There were three Mustangs allowed. The FR500C, the Multimatic built Boss 302.R, and the Multimatic built GT350R-C. The latter had a 58.00mm restrictor. I am not sure why you said the Z/28.R was more restricted. Your document led me to the version for the 2016 season here: http://www.imsa.com/sites/default/fi..._post_cota.pdf One quickly notices that the Z/28.R was no longer eligible for 2016, but the Boss 302.R still was along with the GT350R-C and the non-Z/28.R Camaro. That begs the question again, Why not the Z/28.R for 2016? It could not be the age of the Z/28 if the Boss 302.R was still eligible, and it could not be just because of Stephensen's move. Stephensen apparently did not have the choice of using the Riley Z/28.R, only the non-Z/28 which they must of figured could not be competitive. Still puzzled

True Story: I was flagging at corner 6 in 2013 when the Boss 302.Rs were a couple of laps away from a P1,P2,P3,P4 finish. One of them pulled off the track in front of me as if his motor had just quit. A second one pulled off behind the first one and waited until some other cars passed before pretending to give the other guy a push to restart and they finished something like P7 and P8. Playing the BOP game? ![]() What I don't get is why the Z/28 was not even on the eligible list for 2016. After a successful 2015 season, even with all the BOP BS, it seems strange that both Stevenson and Mantella made plans to switch to other series for 2016 instead of giving it another go with the Z/28. It appears that in the 2016 regulations, the Z/28.R was ineligible, and these teams did not have a choice other than the non-Z/28.R Riley Camaro. |

I'm surprised no one else has seen them. I was hoping for a video of them tearing up the road.

No, that is not question, but the answer. With all the extra BS to slow the Camaros down, they eventually did and couldn't win or were hardly competitive. If you own a race team, and want to make money, by winning and showing off your team and drivers, how can you do that when you are restricted down to hardly being competitive. Who wants to race for third place? Stevenson jumped to a different class all together to get away from that BS. I don't think GM was going to be backing any teams with the Camaro because of 'racing for third' is not something you want to brag about to your customers. It took about a year to get the cars dialed in, but once they did, they dominated and everyone else complained that something had to be done.
So the Camaros were essentially punished for developing/engineering a better race car than it's competitors. I think the customers already knew this. This was about the same time you started seeing the "Camaro" in the Xfinity series. I think GM just wanted to go play in a different sandbox. |
