If there are no step by step picture instructions for accessing and modifying the onstar unit to disable the unit's network connection without losing microphone support - i'll be doing that tomorrow after work.

Got too many tv shows to catch up on today.

The ironic thing is I like this too, and for summer stuff as well. I just do not like people who say "Heh. Must have something to hide."

How old is the "If you have nothing to hide, then the government should be able to do x" or replace government with a monopoly corp which is knee deep in lobbyists. There, a real response.

That will work even if you discontinue the OnStar service.

Very old, but that's a popular opinion, I don't think that automatically makes someone a bootlicker of the state.

Given the work that I do, I just don't get the idea that one system that's capable of tracking you, is worse than another system that definitely is tracking you, and marketing you, and making you pay for it while you're at it.

I completely get both sides of the debate.

Oh? It didn't work until I got it fixed, dealer had swapped my VIN with the car I almost bought in the onstar config/registration. Once we got that sorted out everything worked, but until that point, nothing at all worked from the App.

It's easy and surprised you don't see it. Saying doesn't mean you should want it for yourself.

First and foremost is the safety and security pacjkage. If in an accident and the ai bag deploys help WILL be calls. Now if you are like the people that ride motorcycles without a helmet because "it won't happen to me" then awesome. I hope it doesn't. But I like the assurance.

Second I like the connectivity to my car. Where it is, the status of the tire pressure, oil life, etc.

I like using the OnStar ap to down load directions to my nav system. Easy and convenient.

I like that I can call OnStar and check CELs. Rare but nice to know I have thT ability.

And I'm not a parent but if I were I would LOVE the ability to make sure my kids were driving safely.

That's most of it, but there are more.

But again I'm a bit surprised you can't at least go "yeah I get it, it's just not important to me"

Well, one can allow teenagers 2-3 years from now to turn your car on or off, the other tracks your buying habits and sells it to corps for profits. Assuming you mean cell vs onstar

MITM attacks are old as dirt, if you're logging into "LAWLPONZORS" SSID, you've got bigger issues than some guy jacking with your remote link after the fact. I'll take another look, but the only reasonable ones I've seen and heard of require one to start the process, so that threat to me is about 0%.

Hey, if it's a concern to people, by all means, kill it with fire. Just don't get it personally, but people are entitled to do whatever.

Some points about gonestar.
In the 5th gen it was easily disabled by thieves looking for V8's to strip. Thousands were stolen in the Bay Area, not a single one was ever located by gonestar. Literally took 3 minutes to hack the car, disable module and drive off. Judging be the pics they will find this module soon enough and do the same thing. People thought they were safe, but this was not the case at all. The 5th gen turned out to be childs play for the theft rings, and judging by the pictures in this thread the 6th will be much the same. Disconnect the module, no remote shutdown, no location. Even easier is the push button start. No more breaking the steering lock, or programming a key.

In most cases the doors were hacked and electronically popped. From there the driver either programs a key or breaks the steering lock and installs a hacked ecm. The passenger is disconnecting onstar. The whole process which has been caught on video and reviewed by the Alameda task force who has talked to our local club on how this happens. In other cases the horn wire is cut, the door jimmied and a hacked ecm installed. Passenger still disconnects onstar.

The door hack is either onstar spoofing, or captured Rfid. In almost every case the cars were cased by the thieves, as the cars were off the beaten path in such areas as secured company parking garages. At one point they were even hitting the dealerships and taking them.

Another possible way to disable it is to interupt comms. Plug into the obd plug and take it over. Some bluetooth gauge displays, as well as handhelds will disrupt the comms between onstar and the car.

Relying on this tech to keep your car safe is not enough.

I will forward the pics he took once he sends them to me. One plug, and 2 antenna connectors. It is underneath a plastic panel on the bottom of passenger side dash. It sits directly above your toes so to speak. Remove the plastic panel and it right there next to another module. I will send pics soon as Zach sends them to me.

I posted this because I know it has been discussed before and I find it impulsive how gm wants to shove onstar down your throats even if you don't want it.
Why not just disconnect the antennas to retain the mic? Or put a line to each on a DPDT switch for those that actually see merit in the system?

I simply do not want my driving habits made available for purchase to insurance companies by GM.

I was thinking the same thing. With all the Radio Shacks in my area closed, I would probably have to order a DPDT switch online from Digi-Key.
