Late walking to the office on 5th ave looking at the smoke coming from the first tower when I see & hear the massive fireball explosion from the 2nd plan crash. My knees gave out and I braced myself against a a door frame. First thought was "my God those poor people in that building"
Next days were so sad seeing all the posters in Penn Station for missing people, and the pics of lost fireman outside their station houses. But was also heart warming to see all the FD volunteer tents from around the country outside the Javis Center as the volunteers were shuttled to the pit. God Bless the USA ! |

I was a sophomore in high school. I remember being called to the library with the rest of my class. I was wondering why the whole school was in the library.
We ended up sitting there watching it unfold on TV for the rest of the day. I remember feeling angry and helpless. Thank you to all of the brave men and women that risked you're lives! I took a trip to New York 2 years after the attack and went to the site of the WTC... So devastating!! There was a trailer and fences around the site splattered with missing people posters.

I was up early as my friend and I would car pool to work. I called him and turned out he was off that day. He told me that aircraft had gone into the WTC. I turned my TV on and didnt see anything. Not knowing what was going on, I rushed into work. It hit me when seeing the FPCON Delta signs on the front door. I made my way into the break room and everyone was watching the news. It was unbelievable, frightening, and paralyzing. We were at war at that moment.
It was time that I will never forget. About a week later, I deployed. We opened up what is now Al Udeid. It may have been 15 years, but the events are still so vivid.

I remember I had workers at my home putting a roof on a new shed we were putting up. Later that day I was in a corn field with a farmer that was harvesting and we could see a plane flying over head. We all knew that all airlines had been grounded and considering there were smaller jets flying on both side of it we knew that it had to be AF1.
A day I will never forget and I hope my kids never have to feel that fear and anger we all felt that day.

Same here.
Only about 2 weeks into 5th grade. It was a strange morning. It started with the office calling over the intercom for a student to be sent up for early dismissal. Then a few minutes later they called for another student, and then another. They called out a school wide announcement for teachers to check their email; which was how they broke the news to them. For another hour more and more classmates were getting pulled out and picked up by there parents. It got to the point where they were sending runners with lists to get students rather than using the intercom. Meanwhile we were still in the dark as to why everyone was leaving. Looking back I give my teachers credit for being not missing a beat and keeping calm as if nothing was happening. After awhile they announced we would be closing early and everyone would eat an early lunch. After that early(and empty) lunch we went back to our room and our teacher the sat us down and finally told us what was going on. We then spent the last hour til we left playing scrabble and listing to radio reports of the news. Out of the 120 or so kids in my grade about 25 of us were left by then. It was just eerie.

I was at Barksdale AFB LA where Air Force One made a surprise landing and we escorted Bush off the flight line to make his speech that morning. Everyone assumed it was a live speech but it was taped and he was on his way out when it aired on TV.
The next year was busy to say the least. |

Onboard the USS Spruance DD-963. Just a normal 'getting underway' until the planes started to crash in the buildings!! The only thing I saw on TV was the huge fireball from the second plane hitting the WTC tower!! Seconds later we went in to General Quarter stations with the exception of the Navigation stations. Before we left the pier I saw 2 commercial air north of our base. If they headed towards our base I was to alert the Officer of the Deck. The worst feeling I have ever had in my life. Luckily they headed towards the airport to land. Awhile later we set sail and I watched the land disappear over the horizon. We were at sea for a month and half before coming back to homeport!! I never forget!! I get to relive these memories on every 9-11 Anniversary.~ QM3 SPEHR

I was a junior in HS and was in chemistry class. My teacher left the class and he came back with a blank look on his face and felt something was up. He said we may not know what truly just happened but the WTC have just been hit. I ran out of the room after class to my tutor and for the rest of the day, kids were being sent home early. I stayed the whole day and watched as the second plane hit and at that moment I had a good idea how much this will impact all of us.
My dad is a pilot and he took that day off and thank god he did, I don't know if he had to take one of those flights but I feel thankful for having him here still. It's a day a lot of us will never forget. Thanks to all of those that helped during that time.

I was on the marching band field during our combined 0 block and 1st block practice (we had block scheduling in high school). When we were walking back up to the band hall the freshmen, which were bused in from the 9th grade building were all telling us that the World Trade Center had been hit by an airplane. We thought they were joking until we went in and turned on the TV. We all thought the second plane hitting was a replay until we realized that there was already smoke and fire billowing out of the first tower. While our teachers were made to resume class as though nothing happened, nothing really was accomplished that day.
The weird thing is that freshmen in high school this year are being taught about 9/11 as history as they weren't alive yet to have experienced the day.
