2017 1SS manual skip shift
Anyone else absolutely hate the skip shift from 1st to 4th on the new Camaro? I have this message pop up on my dash every single time I drive it. Unless I hit it hard from the start I get the message..
If I'm behind a vehicle or say I'm just taking my time it is an obvious shift from 1st to 2nd gear, but in the manual it states that when the message appears it is harmful to the transmission if not shifted to 4th gear. Why in the world would I shift to 4th gear at 15 mph just to shift back...don't want to hurt my transmission, and I hear there is a way to get it removed for cheap. Any ideas? Suggestions? Also it states in the manual not to "force" it in to second gear You don't have to force it as it will go most of the time. sometimes it will naturally slide over to 4. |

that's why there are "skip shift eliminators". I got one, and would never go back to driving without it.

Do skip shift eliminators stop the message from being displayed as well? The car has yet to force me into 4th, but the warning message popping up continuously as I'm driving slowly around downtown/parking garages is extremely annoying.

but definitely go for it, it is the cheapest and most useful mod you will find. and the best part is that the CAGS/skip shift eliminator has no drawbacks, does no harm to the tranny, and can be taken off any time with ease if you have to go into the dealership for any warranty issues. some dealerships don't care and will even install it for you, but some others aren't that cool. good luck man

The message will still be on.. I haven't bought my eliminator kit yet. I know already when the message comes on, don't shift wait a second or two and you will be able to go to 2nd. I believe it only locks you for a second or two.

same here. best thing to do is try and avoid shifting between 15-20mph to prevent it from popping up at all.

I always tell everyone when this topic comes up, that we should all be thanking the engineers of the 6 speed with skip shift, and then making it extremely easy and cheap to eliminate after purchasing.
It's the transmission that saves us all from paying the insipid gas guzzler tax on at least the base Camaro SS and Corvette. Upper level trims with more power do still pay GGT but not on the base models. That's what it was designed for. |

I just drive around it and ignore the message. The feature engages between 15-19 mph. I just shift to second gear before 15 mph or after 19 mph. I mostly shift at the higher speed. On the rare occasions I do forget and get caught I don't force a second gear shift but just gently slide it into 3rd gear.
The lock-out mechanism has not blocked a 3rd gear shift for me and I don't lug the engine as bad in 3rd gear as I would in fourth.

yes, I was going to say that too...
I go 1st to 3rd on every upshift for "normal" driving. very smooth and feels right. the "gate" does not try to impede going to 3rd either. going to 4th feels bit clunky. 2nd is only useful for hauling ass or when i'm in traffic. |

As said above, I also agree this was a great idea by the GM engineers in order to avoid the gas guzzler tax, & it's an easy item to bypass if desired. My skip shift eliminator was ordered the day after I brought my car home & installed the day it arrived. Cheap to buy & works perfectly as described without throwing a code. Yes, the indicator still comes on, but the pin that prevents you from going into 2nd no longer engages, so you are free to shift as you like. I also frequently do the 1-3-5 shift pattern for "normal" driving.
I don't have access to a lift, so I just got the front two wheels on ramps & crawled under the car. Easy to remove the existing connector to install the skip shift harness in-line, you just need a long blade flat screwdriver & decent lighting to see where everything is. It's just a bit tough to get the skip shift harness upper connector lined & installed correctly as there isn't much room. But persistence pays off with a satisfying "click" & you are done from there. |
