Large USB Flash Drive - 128/256GB

Anyone use a large flash drive with their music library?

Just wondering how fast or slow it is. Thinking about doing this after reading a couple other threads but I don't want to be 5 minutes down the road before my music is ready.

I'm using a USB3.0 32GB right now. I have a Rock playlist with 500+ songs on it. My older 2.0 USB drive would take like 5 secs to switch tracks and 1+ to start playing on start up. The 3.0 cut that down to under 2 secs to switch and maybe 20 secs to play. Get a good fast drive and I think you will be good.

What? My manual says that a HD won't work. That's what I get for following instructions. I will try the HD when I get home. If that doesn't work then I will go for the Flash Drive. Thanks!

If the format and power supply are right, it should. Don't remember if there was a GB limit.

Do you know off hand what the power requirement is?

Think it depends on the drive. Some can run of the standard voltage from the USB port. Others may have adapters to use one port for power, another for data.

I've got a Seagate GoFlex HDD that will boot off most USB ports.

Thanks! I'll check mine out when I get home. I think it's WD Passport.

The drive needs to be bus powered and low voltage. So something with either a SSD or 4200rpm 2.5" drive inside should meet the requirements. The PDIM in the 6th gen likely only has USB 2.0 ports, but are noticeably faster than the USB 1.1 in the 5th gen. Any portable HDD that works on a laptop should work on the PDIM port.

If you want USB music to fire up right away on startup, I recommend a drive that has a SSD, as a cold starting platter drive might have some initial lag on power up which could cause the MyLink to time out waiting for it and switch to FM or pop the "connection error" message like it does with Pandora sometimes.

People were able to get 128gb working on the 5th gen, so the limit on the 6th gen could be 256gb or maybe higher. With this info handy, that makes the Gen5DIY media mod kind of worth it. You could bring a bunch of videos with you to play on roadtrips. Screw song playlists, do music video playlists. =)

HDD didn't work. It kept forcing Mylink to reboot. My flash drive is a slow load from my Mac. 20,000 songs and it took all night. Not sure my old ass Mac likes the 3.0 drive.

What is the Gen5DIY media mod?

It is a reflash of the HMI that allows for video playback, full input control while in motion (for your passenger), and some other tweaks. I believe it is listed as the Motion Mod on his site.
